Join our Discord Server!

Our community's continued use of IRC has become very archaic and most of us have been reluctant to even install a client to connect to the channel, most settling for that shitty Mibbit web app I set up almost 7 years ago. However, over the last year I have seen more and more friends ditch IRC and Skype in favor of Discord servers and group chat, and I'd like to remind you all that we've had a Discord server up and running since last April:

https://discord.gg/u4pFUr8

Officially, we will continue to support our SlashNET IRC channel for the foreseeable future, and I will continue to idle in the channel to make myself available to anybody seeking site-related support. However, from here on out, all development work will be prioritizing Discord integration over IRC, which includes a chatbot that I am planning to develop for v4.

If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.

Thank you,

We should consider slack over discord, given its deep integrations with developer tooling, and focus on team based chats and whatnot rather that focusing on gaming, if we're a developer community rather than a gaming community.

Either works, though most people aren't getting onto the chat to do anything serious or team related. So Discord makes better contextual sense maybe.

Yeah, definitely depends on what people want to get out of having this chat.

I use Discord for friends, Slack for work, so I know both very well. Discord is an easier and more fitting application to use, in my opinion, and I hardly use it for gaming anyway. There's not much better that Slack can offer for a bunch of people who just want to get together and talk – in fact, I feel it outright impedes it sometimes.

I'd be interested to hear why you think that. I use HipChat for work (against my will), and slack for talking with friends / idling in developer communities. I find slack to be pretty dang conducive to good chats, and now that it supports threads, capable of some neato-terrific stuff.

Well, if anybody wants to use Slack instead, I did a thing:

Seeing all of the people who have joined the server since I posted this, I'd say that Discord is probably the best choice for general chat. We've had more activity here in the past 24 hours than on the IRC channel in the past month, and I regret not announcing our server sooner like I intended.

Seeing how I do want to shift the site's focus back to development, I think Slack is worth looking into in the future.

Discord server is lit.

Out of interest, what's the benefit of developer tool integration stuff in Slack? Really haven't used it a lot myself, but I have the vague impression that it's stuff like getting new Git commits IMed you, which sounds like the modern equivalent of those annoying current-song-I'm-listening to IRC extensions.
