Mandelbrot Fractal Explorer
This is a quick little demo of the <a href="">Mandelbrot Fractal</a> converted over to GM. Of course, getting GM to render anything on a per-pixel basis is a tad slow, but I have added a "resolution" feature to the code that will render a low resolution preview.

To use, click and drag the image on the screen to move the preview window around, and use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out (a tiny bit quirky, as it offsets to the upper left). Once you've got an image you want to render in full resolution, press the space bar, and wait for GM to finish. In about 10 minutes, your computer will have used GM to render part of the Mandelbrot Fractal!

If you want an even higher quality image, try going into the key press event for the draw object, and change the resolution argument from 1 to .5. This will increase the time it takes to render, but will also add some anti-aliasing to the image.

The code used in this example was mostly lifted from a previously written example on Mandelbrot, found <a href="">here</a>;. I won't pretend to be much of an authority on math, and credit is due to the maker of this site.

If you use this example to create anything, credit to me is appreciated but not required. Enjoy!

Pretty cool, now you've made me interested enough to learn about the math behind fractals.

mandelbrot is awesome. I've used it before to generate planets and such. Good job!

Wow, I thought that it was only KC and Yourself who were into making those things. Sadly, I don't have a mousewheel. v_v (darn old PS2 mouses)

wow nice effect you have there... except the fact that it takes forever to render but you cant really stop that, huh?

Nice. I was considering mabye doing this....

Some info on it and some corrections: The mandelbrot set is not a fractal, though it does contain copies of itself. theyre just not in the right spots for it to be a fractal.

There was also something i learned recently, that every example of chaos is contained in the set, or something like that.

(i was just at this math camp, and the last week we learned all this cool stuff about fractals and chaos and stuff)

I was working on some other math thing, where fractals exist in random sets of points, but this pwns whatever i was going to do. 10/10, and added to my favorites. Its not the best ive seen, but for something done in GM, incredible.

omg the mandelbrot amazes me. if you zoom in a lot you'll find more madelbrots! this is really awesome, good work!

I... Don't... Understand!

It just looked like a bunch of pixels to me...

And that preveiw looks somewhat like our good friend Yourself's avatar.

10/10 anyway.

I didn't understand untill I pressed the space bar XD.
huge arrays, takes a while, speed it up by using screen_refresh() less often, please.
- I took the screen refresh functions out, way faster ^_^
