Fake 3D (Voxel) Example
First off, the engine is not mine, It's Nobody's
http://64digits.com/games/index.php?cmd=view_game&id=606
But I put a comment on there saying this is how units are made in tiberian sun and many other command and conquer games, and I thought, "Maybe I can convert voxels into this"
So I did, with the NOD attack cycle from Tiberian Sun (because it's small). It's on its end (my mistake, but it's only proof of concept anyway)
Also there's a tank I made to get to grips with the engine, and a box... thing.

Move with WASD

P.S the conversion process is slow. I open the voxel in VSE II (http://www.tibed.net/voxel) and then copy/paste the slices into an image editing software to save the pieces. Is there a way to automate this? if so people could make a total red alert clone or whatever.

Target platforms:

I've used this plenty of times. I have my own way that's more efficient than Nobody's. It even gives you a 3D-ish perpsective.

I can't download it, though...

Eh... it's alright.
The effect is nice on the bike, but it's much easier to do the same thing with image_angle=direction, unless you don't have the registered version, in which case it wouldn't be so easy.
When you move stuff it doesn't seem to ever stop... you might want to add a little friction.

The main problem with this example: Who's gonna sprite like that?
Anyway, 6/10 because it could have used some work before you released it.

But then i remembered his user name

Basically for fake 3D, you have to draw your sprites a certain way.

Terrible. Abyssmal programming using an inefficient method that isn't even a true voxel engine. 2/10

Could have used 1 sprite for an object...
Yep. That's what my and Obelisk's rendition's do. (although animation requires multiple sprites in said case.)

you have to use tons of sprites because it's unregistered...

All the time spent making those sprites is worth more than the $20 (USD) it takes to register your GM and use d3d... this is nice but rediculously complex for something so simple.

6/10

Thanks WarLord!
A couple of things. it's meant to be usable for unregistered GM, and it doesn't take long to make your own sprites, considering the 3D effect (the tank took 20mins or so, working it out as I went along), the other ones use loads of sprites because they are ripped tiberian sun graphics, but I made a macro for it so it's not much effort.
I have made a new version with teh NOD artillery too, will upload soon.
Juju, I appreciate your honesty?
