trees and grass

This tutorial gives you the basic idea on howto create trees and brush. Its always a good idea to limit what is drawn at distance. Also this is not very optimised when it comes to object count however that is not the point of this tutorial.

The tree consists of a cone for the trunk, a large set of boughs going up around the trunk, and some different boughs for when the tree is at a distance.

Grass is simply 2 walls criss crossed. It does not always face the character which gives it the more 3D feel. Better grass engines are available but this is a simple way to enhance your game.

Its great that people are developing these practical examples to help with 3d games. I personally haven't seen this done in GM before but practically every commercial 3d game I have ever played uses this type of effect to save time and fps lag. Great example runs smoothly, looks good, does what it says and is programmed in a way that I couldn't think of a better one. Bravo.

Obviously people who plan on making well-made 3d games but still need the help of the example would use their own graphics and replacement effects, but if anyone is going to use this straight away I recconmend that they change the 'low-detail' sprite for trees, it looks more like the trees lose their leaves when you walk near them. Also change it so that you can't have the 'high' and 'low' detailed modes together.

ye lol, I realized that it was kindof crap from near to far but I decided what the heck, its just an example... I guess it forces people to make their own trees instead of copy and pasting.

Maybe one way of fixing would be to increase the angle of the close up leaves, add a few more and just forget the verticle far away leaves... ye so anyway.

AGH! I wish you'd said this was a 3D example in the title or description. It's VERY useful and I've been looking all over for a good way to draw trees. I'm going to have to rate this more on usefulness than composition, because I myself can use it just fine.

Not bad, but not great either. Yeah, it's 3D, I'll give it bonus points for that, but they aren't exactly the best 3D trees I've seen in GM. I guess it's useful, and that's what counts though, so I'll give it: 8/10
