Ogres and Elves
Damn, so many cases of misfortune but I've finally been able to kinda finish it.

F5 and F6 to save and load have been enabled because of lack of time to add a proper system. The ending is pretty rough and there's quite a lot of missing features, hope you don't mind. This game'll get updated later.

Please keep in mind I lost around 2 weeks of time to program because of computer issues while playing, I also had another issue Sunday causing me to submit this game one day late.

Hope you enjoy it and have fun!

Iasper and Charlie Carlo

Target platforms:

<3 I'll edit in a bit, just letting you know I'm excited.

Edit: Here is my review!

I'll start with the areas in which you guys could see some improvement:
- Fix the menu screen - it's unintuitive. If the mouse controls it, let me click on things. It took me a second to realize that the center item was the one you selected.
- Update fighting animations... it gets the point across, but it could look much better.
- Fix the elf spawning with the barracks because I spawned inside a tree and couldn't move

Now that we're done with that: This is my number one pick for the compo due to the fact that you need to flesh this out and make it a full game. Seriously. I love Tactics RPGs. And this one could be pretty awesome if you cleaned up some stuff. Charlie should also make some higher res graphics - these are fine for now, but with some sharper visuals, you could pull in a larger audience.

Take this and run with it guys. You have something here! :P

I just realized I totally forgot to check for trees when looking for a place to spawn an Elf. Barracks are totally broken, I've realized that by now as well, eventually they'll be replaced by houses with an entirely different function anyway. Thanks for the review Acid :D

And about the screenshots, I had like 1 minute to zip the game and submit it, hence the pretty unprofessional looking game icon. I'll be adding screenshots from the next release on :)

Awesome concept! Good game (considering its really incomplete as you said). However it's very slow-pace because of the huge map. The barracks spawn elves on top of elves that exist already as far as I'm aware, I could be wrong. Also, snow is very trippy when you move about the map.

I love the music, sprites and overall presentation of this game, you guys did a very good job on this entry. Though it would be nice if the speed of the game could be increased and if you wouldn't ask the user that an additional action can be performed on the tile at the end of each player's turn. Perhaps you should put an indicator on the screen that this can be done and have the player manually bring up that option if they choose.

I also ran into some game-breaking bugs. Santa got stuck in a tree from which he could not move out of because I noticed that characters get teleported to the upper adjacent block under certain circumstances. Also, as soon as one of my elves died, I got this error:

action number 1
of Draw Event
for object obj_camera:

Error in code at line 10:
at position 54: Unknown variable x

Aside from that, this entry clearly expresses its potential to be a really fun game worth revisiting again some day. You and Charlie clearly put effort into your entry and this makes me extremely happy that I was lenient with late entries.

8/10 - 1/10 (game-breaking bug) + 1/10 (effort) = 8/10

Yeah Pirate Rob I believe showed me that error as well, I forgot to make it switch the selected unit if it dies. Thanks for the review :)

This looked so promising but...

* I started the game in windowed mode as there were no fullscreen mode. I ran through a few of the dialog screens and tried pressing escape to look for an ingame menu.

* The game closed and I found myself pressing space in order to skip the dialogs I had already seen. Then I continued pressing space because the game is like that and thenI skipped some of the dialog.

* I didn't much care however as there were so much of it. I continued skipping from then on.

Controls are amazingly clunky. I have to point, then >right< click then hit space and repeat just in order to move. If I have to do more complex stuff I just simply give up.
I know I really shouldn't rate this seeing how I didn't play further than the whole building stones or whatever screen but I do anyway because this game has serious game breaking controls!
Consider making the game so I don't have to read for 5 minutes just to move around. Consider making playing it as simple as possible. Thank you. And sorry.
I *might* try this again.
It is very promising. But it gets on my nerves.

The music is excellent. The concept is excellent and I could never do a TBS or RTS because of the overhead required. The background graphics are excellent, but I really don't think Charlo's character style fits this kind of game at all.

Sadly, there were some very nasty bugs that made the game difficult to play.
- The barracks bug, as you're aware, makes building your army generally impossible.
- There's a bug where selecting another unit while the first is moving, then accepting the tile interaction order, will disable both their turns.
- Evidently moving a unit behind another depletes its moves even if the blocking unit moves that turn.
- A pathfinding issue you may be aware of is that units can't move around other units.
- Ending the turn before a unit was finished moving produced some very interesting effects.... In short, Santa walked randomly through trees and units during the enemy turn, and ended up getting stranded in the middle of their forces.

- Is there any particular reason why the game doesn't end when Santa dies...?

Overall, my complaints are almost entirely with the interface. Leave the chatbox for dialogue, and consider popups for interactions and events. Resource gathering feels a bit strange. Not bad, but strange in that you don't dedicate units to it, and it's entirely based on where you move your units. This is unique, but adds an unnecessary confirmation to units you just want to move into strategic positions.
I really dislike TBS games and to be frank, this one didn't make me feel much better about the genre, but I think you have room to make it more interesting, given more time.

Because of the barracks bug, very early on did I get into a position where it was impossible to win. That, and the enemy turn takes a very long time. Consider a fast-forward feature that has each unit pick its spot but skip movement. This might be enabled by default for enemies that are in the fog of war (as it is in most TBS games).

I can see you put a great amount of work into this though, and even though I have a certain amount of disdain for TBS games, I did find it somewhat refreshing. Keep building (HAH!) on it.

- Does the menu really need to scroll for three options?

- I viewed the credits and went back to the main menu. When I clicked new game, the credits appeared again. When I clicked new game again, the game crashed.

- The "avatar" for the person talking flickers momentarily as the dialogue box scrolls up.

- Tutorial dialogue dragging on... losing interest. Just tell me I need to right click somewhere to go there. The display on the GUI makes the rules obvious.

- "It's not too hard is it? Go ahead and click it!" Stop babying me, I heard you the first time.

- *right click goal* *left click box thing* *right click goal* *left click box thing* *right click goal* *left click box thing* *right click goal* *left click box thing* - So much work for something so simple.

- Tutorials, pls go.

- Why not show a units health in a bar above their head? That would negate the need to explain the health display in the top right corner.

- I like the fighting animation :3

- *right click* *right click* WHY AREN'T YOU ATTACKING?! Oh, I need to end my turn.

- "Good job! You managed to take out the Ogre!" - No shit.

- "You probably haven't noticed, but for every step you take, your health is restored by one point" - I didn't notice. Why not just have "+1 HP" fly out of the unit's head as he moves to make this clear without needing to explain?

- Soooooooooooo muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch diaaaaaaaaalooooooooooooooooooooooogue :(.

- Oooh, resource bar. Good job on only showing that now. Shoving a ton of GUI elements in the player's face at the start can be quite overwhelming and confusing.

- The music is great, but it's starting to get a little annoyingly repetitive at this stage. There should be more than one track. I wish there was a way to quickly disable it in-game.

- Also, the English in the dialogue isn't the best. It might be worth getting a native English speaker to rewrite it all.

- Oooh, I just realized I can click through this endless dialogue. :)

- I've also just realized I completely ignored all of the dialogue that I just clicked through.

- The color/class thing for elves is a little confusing. Why not add militaristic features to the military ones (guns, muscle etc.)?

- Okay no really, the dialogue is starting to get VERY annoying at this stage.

- "Make sure there's a free space adjacent to the barracks so an elf can spawn" ... surely it's your job as the programmer to make sure the player can't accidentally do that?

- The mouse-edge-camera-movement thing should respond before you hit the edge of the screen.

- The menu that appears every time I move a unit is annoying and obtrusive.

- "Some units have not received orders yet" YES, I KNOW THAT BY HOW THE TURN THING IS ORANGE.

- *presses escape to try and deselect unit*... *game exits*... For fuck's sake...

- *reopens* *clicks "New Game"* *gets credits*

- *clicks New Game again* Ugghhhh, not all this dialogue again...

- *right click goal* *left click box thing* *right click goal* *left click box thing* *right click goal* *left click box thing* *right click goal* *left click box thing*

- How do I get an elf to build something without moving???? :(

- Menu is a little buggy. It sometimes does the wrong thing when I click an option.

- Where the fuck is my worker? Oh, he's behind a tree.

- Why do I need to send an elf to a building to do something with that building? Surely the building should just be a unit in of itself?

- So, why is this turn based? This plays more like an RTS. The turn based system just feels like it's in the way.

- Why can't I do anything? Oh, the ogres are having their turn. This should be made more obvious.

- At this stage I'm wondering what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm getting a little bored, and skipping through turns with the hope of seeing some action.

- Movement is sooooo limiting.

- The fog of war is probably diminished when I can see exactly how many units the enemy has by the turn indicator thing?

- Oh... I just wasted all of those turns moving my units that way because there's a lake of ice which I apparently can't walk over. *sigh*

- Been moving my units around for nearly ten minutes now and I still haven't seen any ogres or have felt compelled to collect resources. I'm not having that much fun.

- Another five minutes later. I look forward in the map to see I have to navigate around a massive forest, which will take an eternity thanks to the turn based movement system. Getting very bored now.

- *accidentally presses escape again to deselect unit*

I won't rate it, because this game is clearly still in pre-alpha. It has promise, but as it is, I have no desire to play it again at the moment. I hope you find my feedback helpful.

Definitely has bugs (i.e. I randomly lost one worker near the beginning, and a little while later two soldiers got stuck on the same space and refused to move; also, barracks don't check that the space they create units on is actually free, which...also leads to more unusable units), but I like the way it's going. Movement speeds are so slow that it takes a while to move units anywhere, but I do like how resource collection works.

I should also probably mention that the FPS seemed to drop to the 40-50 range quite frequently, despite the PC I'm on having decent specs. So some optimization might be in order too.

notexactlyanedit: I told an elf to go next to a tree to collect lumber from it, and he promptly jumped into the tree's space and hugged it.
Damn I love these bugs.

These bugs are like Bethesda bugs. They're so amusing that you can't help but smile and tip your hat.

wow there are a lot of comments here already, so there probably isn't much else i can say that hasn't already been said. My biggest concern? A lot of nearly game breaking bugs here. Right from the start my Santa got stuck in a tree some how, the barracks kept placing new elves ontop of existing ones even though there were other spaces available, clicking on the text in the menues doesn't seem to work all that well, elves just disappearing, elves some how ending up on the same block and than refusing to perform or move and the list goes on.

I like the music and graphics, as well as the slow pace resource gathering. However i really didn't get to experience much else other than gather resources, build barracks, do some walking and that's pretty much it. i played for around 45 mins and didn't find any damn ogres other than the tutorial one. it's a pretty boring game and moves perhaps a bit too slow, even for a game like this. also it might help to be able to see the enemies, if they exist, that way at least you would know there's something out there other than wood and rocks. needs more things to build and more types of elves too.

I thought that pix babying you fitted right into the game, though I do agree that there may have been too much story during the gameplay. Had it come before, I think it would have been manageable.

Thanks a ton for the comments everyone
I did in fact add a check to barracks to note the player if there are no empty tiles near, but apparently this doesn't work, and i forgot to check for trees and mountains anyway.
Despite it's non-intuitivity, the main menu is supposed to work. Not sure why it bugged there.
In the future, when you select a new game, you'll be able to customize features to your liking and yes, you can disable Pix here.
I'm going to look into possibly turning this into an RTS since you do certainly have a point there.
The programming was done in an incredibly small frame of time, hence the incompleteness, grammar errors and lack of bugtesting.
I'll be adding a fast-forward button in the future that should make stuff less boring.
Besides this there's various minor feature suggestions that really appeal to me so I'll probably be implementing them.
Thanks for the feedback!

I really enjoyed the time I got to play (Santa found a spot in the cliff to hide and wouldn't come out). I would have kept playing if I could have.

Also I think my elf thought he was Gandolf because he went from grey to white as did a couple others. Not sure what was up with that.

I'll admit I used the elf teleporting to my advantage when I figured it out. It let me move farther that I should have and even let me gather more resources when I ended up in a corner.

Those are the only comments I have to make that haven't been made, Good job.

One of my elves got stuck in a tree and couldn't be operated anymore. It's also odd that you can walk right by the troll without starting any sort of battle. The menu scroll, as Steven ... pointed... okay, Steven has already listed all the problems I was going to. Except one. Your textbox system: why does it type the name of the speaker out slowly? The speaker's name isn't being spoken; just dump everything until the first colon to start off with.

The graphics were very pretty. The snow, or perhaps size of the level, or something, caused WINE to run the game at 20 FPS. Probably more of a Game Maker thing. It made the already annoying speed issues about three times worse, though.

Anyway, well done. The game could use a little more work here and there, but overall is quite nice.
