Phobos Fatboy

(I've decide to make this game episodic instead and release new levels every once in awhile. So here's the two levels from before)
(also, you restart the screen you're on instead of the entire level)

The first installment of an episodic megaman-esque platform shooter. Very difficult but possible.

Z - jump
X - shoot
arrow keys - move
F4 - fullscreen

Meh, I guess it's alright with a checkpoint at every screen. It's just, idk, it doesn't feel like a old fashion tough game anymore. I'm not sure, maybe it's just me but it feels too easy now. Meh, whatever I love this game too much. 10/10 Can't wait to see what you do next.
Cesque commented March 22, 2011 at 9:13 AM
No, it's not alright. It's worse than I thought. It's horrible. You can just run through the first three rooms without doing anything, and then in the fourth one, the game attempts to force you to play legitimately, but the fact that you can just restart the level made me instead attempt to speedrun through it as fast as I could without dying a few times.

As a result, a typical player will probably run through most rooms without thinking, and then get stuck because they'll never bother learning a tactic to deal with some enemies. Meh. I can just no longer get into the right mindset to play this game. I quit faster than before. :P

Bring back the checkpoints. They were okay, you just forgot to put them in the second room.

Also, I don't like the linear structure. Picking the boss was cool, just make the player do it with the keyboard, not the mouse :P

Edit: Okay. Basically: any room which is short enough to pass through without taking a lethal amount of damage is now essentially pointless. And if you want to do something useful, give the first boss less health (some 10-20% less). The battle is just too long.
sk8m8trix commented March 22, 2011 at 10:22 AM
gonna tell you the same thing people told me when I started making Robot Factory... AUTO-FIRE! Then I'd actually try to fight the enemies instead of just running through rooms like Cesque. It's really pretty and I like it though, so just make the damn thing easier.
Ferret commented March 22, 2011 at 4:33 PM
After a second run, I completely agree with cesque, I think the reason I didn't notice the huge difference was because I was playing it the same way I was playing it earlier (and not dying).

Also, yeah, that first boss just takes forever.
Castypher commented March 22, 2011 at 5:24 PM
Looks like you took my complaints the wrong way.

The checkpoint system was fine. Like Cesque said, you just didn't have any in the second level. And obviously, that was the level I played most. What can I say? I wanted to see Potfrog.

- First boss is too long, blah blah blah. You may also want to add another attack pattern, because doing the same thing over and over is very annoying.
- Potfrog was an enjoyable boss.
- Boss minions should probably die when the boss is killed. Maybe bullets too. It would probably suck to take forever on that first boss just to die to a stray bullet.
- You need to get some looping music one day.
- Those jumps are annoying as hell.

I can't think of anything else right off.

Oh yes. The graphics are just excellent.
And regarding the complaints about background tiles versus foreground tiles, bear in mind that while you darken the tiles in the first level to show the background, the second level has many dark tiles that you can walk on. Just a thought.

On to the next project, I am completely sick of this (the game, not you guys).
Ferret commented March 22, 2011 at 9:03 PM
Sorry >.<
Aistarin commented March 22, 2011 at 9:12 PM
Well at least you can say that you're still making games. :P
LoserHands commented March 22, 2011 at 9:51 PM
I'm sorry to hear that, I didn't want this to die after I beat the first boss, who was actually pretty fun if you didn't mind the length. The atmosphere in Potfrog's level is so awesome.
And to be honest I did not have the BG v FG issue in that section, just the first.. ):
Cesque commented March 22, 2011 at 10:31 PM
Hey, at least bring back the structure of the previous demo with working checkpoints before quitting :(
Castypher commented March 22, 2011 at 11:19 PM
You get discouraged so easily Rez. Is the criticism you asked for a little too much or are you genuinely bored with it? Because if you're bored, do what I do, go to a different project, and come back to this one when you feel better and more inspired.

But the question is, what other projects do you have now?
Rez commented March 22, 2011 at 11:25 PM
I am genuinely bored with this because I spend literally days and days of my life making sure everything was varied, challenging, and different looking and this is my lowest rated game on the site. I have new projects but I'm not discussing them. xD
Cesque commented March 22, 2011 at 11:37 PM
So it's about rating? Have a 10 then.
thernz commented March 22, 2011 at 11:43 PM
have another 10
just because potfrog is in a game in complete form

it's pretty much better than any of your older games anyway
Ferret commented March 22, 2011 at 11:49 PM
Btw, the rating system is broken, I see ratings of 10 across the board here.
Nighthawk commented March 23, 2011 at 12:55 AM
Yeah, comments without ratings count as 0s. Here's another ten to help bring up your average.
Castypher commented March 23, 2011 at 1:03 AM
I didn't rate, and I edited, which brought the rating to 0. Have a 10.
panzercretin commented March 23, 2011 at 1:05 AM
I'm gonna be the obligatory cocknuckle that gives you a 9.

lol @ midword filtering. What is this, Runescape?

I guess I'll have to cock my guns from now on.
hel commented March 23, 2011 at 1:12 AM
wow, there's no point in even uploading games here if we can't have a rating system that works right. this place is so ghetto-rigged it's embarrassing.
Ferret commented March 23, 2011 at 1:30 AM
I've tried and failed, I'm kicking fsx to do it.
Castypher commented March 23, 2011 at 1:35 AM
Nobody knows the site code better than him and Canadonian. I'll do it if you want another week of downtime.
Aistarin commented March 23, 2011 at 6:09 AM

Alright, lemme see what I can do.
StevenOBrien commented March 23, 2011 at 2:27 PM
The gameplay's not really for me, I can't even get past screen 6 so I can't really comment on that. The graphics and sound fit together perfectly though, it all just feels very polished and put together well. I can tell you put a lot of effort into this, and I don't want to see this die just because of a broken rating system. Make another few episodes if you still want to and play around with the gameplay a bit. You get a 10 from me (hopefully).
Obelisk commented March 28, 2011 at 4:55 AM
It's like falling in love all over again. I shall call you Ratftroid.

The first boss is too damn hard, so I didn't get to see Potfrog. I'll try again later.
JuurianChi commented March 28, 2011 at 11:02 AM
I played this in front of my C++ professor, he was hooked.
S3xySeele commented May 08, 2011 at 7:59 AM
Pretty cool game. I suck at it tho.
death commented September 24, 2011 at 2:35 AM
wow that's hard... and probably for the wrong reasons. too slow and big. such a big target, shoot rate is slow as well and the enemies are tough. it's really really hard to avoid getting hit in the 2nd room. you got the medusa-like heads flying at ya and the 8-way shooters.

somethings wrong with the audio playback, there's a huge delay between loops.

i was also hoping for original music but was disappointed =(

i'll give a generous 7/10. my only problems lie with the character, but the game seems mostly bugless, great graphics and such. well polished, just needs to be a little more reasonable.
Ferret commented September 24, 2011 at 5:29 AM
It's debatable, but to me I think of it as working over the disadvantages and beating the game that isn't in my favor. Then again I do love me some Demon's Souls.
hel commented September 24, 2011 at 10:23 AM
i don't know what Rez was thinking making the main character so slow and cumbersome, everything else about this game is fucking perfect.
Toast commented September 24, 2011 at 12:33 PM
I didn't quite get Ferret's comparison to Demon's Souls until I tried playing again and actually managed to beat the first boss (who is infinitely more difficult than potfrog btw). What seems like an unfairly difficult game is actually all down to learning the RIGHT way of doing it.

I personally love the character and his name (my 6yo brother thought he was the most hilarious thing ever) and he's probably the best thing in the game.

Graphically the game is really good. I think there's a few reasons the actual gameplay is getting a bit of criticism. I think there's a lack of diversity in that there is no character development, unlockables or collectables. If you look at metroid, megaman, castlevania, super mario, etc, etc, that's something which they all have to some degree.

I'm reminded of Warioland 2 - the gameplay is similar because there's only 2-3 enemies on the screen at once, Wario is a bit clunky and useless, doesn't jump far and doesn't die. What that game did well to have was all the other stuff - there were coins frickin everywhere and every level had an unlockable treasure and puzzle piece which you won through mini-games (which you needed the coins to play!). As you went along there were new gameplay elements introduced as Wario had different "forms".

A couple of other minor flaws, firstly you can shoot enemies which are off screen... you can shoot them, but they can't shoot you, so you end up sort of cheating. Secondly the medusa heads are just floating health drops imo, I didn't really like that for the same reason.

Then again, I hate megaman, so ignore everything I said.
Rez commented September 24, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Hey sweet my game got bumped!

It's awesome to see people with all these new things to say. These comments are enlightening. And toast, you've inspired me. I should totally make a new game with all that good wario land junk. I love that game series so much.
Fabio commented November 01, 2011 at 12:51 AM
I must have missed this when I was on my multi-yearlong hiatus from this community, but this is excellent. Super challenging and in a good way. I loved the spriting and atmosphere that was created due to it, it all fit together very nicely. Just some good level design on display consistently as well. Loved this hard, man.
Rez commented November 01, 2011 at 1:32 AM
Thanks Fabio. :)
ludamad commented September 02, 2012 at 5:27 PM
Looks like I never commented, but I really liked this game back when I played it.
Visor commented September 02, 2012 at 10:56 PM
It's a solidly build platformer and a lot of varied elements -- I found it quite entertaining. The only thing I have an issue with is the pace of the game (and the second boss, who I found was easier to kill if I simply stood idle by the door and kept hitting the shoot button).

I'll give a full review when it's complete. Pretty good though. The art is amazing.
ludamad commented September 03, 2012 at 1:57 AM
Maderick: Sorry if my bump was misleading - this game isn't getting finished per se, REZ is doing a rewrite.
Rez commented August 25, 2017 at 8:01 PM
man i was so bad about taking criticism back then

all the complaints here are valid
