Dimensional Quest

You wake up in a strange place with floating blocks everywhere, and strange hostile creatures. Your mission is to simply escape from that place. No, you don't care if it's in grave danger of being destroyed by a maniacal leader that goes by the name of the Heirophant, or if darkness is corrupting the many dimensions of that world, you just want to escape. But it leads you into a far larger quest than you imagined... Having to save this place to get out? Being honest, I'd prefer just getting out and letting it die, but it's the only way.

This is still a demo and may have a bug or two unknown to me remaining, so please tell me if there's a bug hiding in there.

left and right arrows keys - Move (Switch sides on the magic menu)
Up and down - move around a menu
double tap left or right - begin dashing, making your jumps farther and moving about quicker.
Z - Confirm action, jump
X - Examine
C - Item/status pause screen
V - Magic pause screen

PS : Help get the topic on the GMC some more publicity for me, will ya folks?

There were a few depth issues with the ground blocks, but this game seems to be quite good so far, nice work :)
V commented August 08, 2008 at 6:46 PM
Myeah, the depth on the blocks didn't like the idea of cooperating with me for whatever reason, so I'm thinking of messing with the sprite for the 3D effect on the block. But I'm glad you enjoyed it. =D

Also, I will be updating the game, so i'd suggest tracking it if you want the latest on the game.

Bug: During the boss battle if you attack again right away just after you killed his little 10 HP Minion guy, it attacks it as if it's still there, I assume you have it wait until the particles are done to destroy the instance, and that's what's causing it.

Another bug: Going backwards from the room where you fight that boss, you can get stuck in an infinite loop of room switching, sometimes even fall through the floor, it's REALLY hard to get out of.

Anyhow, I'm not a fan of Final Fantasy's battle system, I much prefer the Tales one, but that's just a personal preference, so I won't include that in my rating. As a clone of FF's battle system, it works pretty well, so kudos to you for that. The platforming aspect is also good, I liked that, however having to stop all the time at random in a platformer is EXTREMELY annoying, if this was top down I'd excuse that, but since it's not, I recommend you dump random encounters and make the enemies show up outside of battles, chasing you, and when you collide the battle starts, this way at least you know when they're coming. The HUD in battle needs work I think, it works right now, but it has a very unpolished look to it that has to go. Also, all of the graphics vary from good to bad, some of them are well shaded, others are pillow shaded, and some have no shading at all, that needs to be addressed, as that inconsistency is also very unpolished looking. For dialogue, I also think you should back off the multiple exclamation points, one is sufficient in my opinion. Anyways, despite all of it's flaws in professionalism, the game is fun, and that's what really counts. You have a good system, all it needs are a few tweaks here and there, and since it's a WIP, you still have lots of time to fix it's issues here and there.

Gameplay: 9/10
Graphics: 7/10
Sound/Music: 7/10
Overall: 8/10

Final Thoughts: Not bad, fix those things I mentioned, and this could be a really great RPG.
V commented August 08, 2008 at 9:30 PM
Those two bugs I just so happen to know of, and have fixed already. I should probably upload a newer version with magic attacks and some of the next area. As for the spontaneous battles, I know it's quite annoying. It's gonna be a bit difficult to put in normal wandering enemies, the way I have things programmed. As for the spriting job, some of it was definantly half assed, others were worked on for quite awhile. The HUD for the selection system is temporary for the time being, as I'm focusing on gameplay first, graphics later. And the dialogue... Yeah, I personally thought the first cutscene was awfully cheesy in the first place, so I figured I would fix that up a bit.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, it's going to help quite a bit towards the game's production!

Reminds me of sonic =]
pretty fun, although it could be better.
6/10 sorry lol, it's not that good.

This is indeed original. I just hope you get original graphics along with it. Also it looks professional, however a nice story would be nice.

... Sonic? XD

Yes, I also noticed some depth issues with the blocks but I honestly didn't think it was that big of a deal, I wouldn't worry about that until final release. The combat system was pretty cool, and I liked the magic and particle effects, they looked pretty good. I think you should probably get rid of the Link sprite/enemy and perhaps make your own? I know this is a demo so I'm not going to let it affect my rating much, I'm just a big advocate of self-sprited games, or at least original sprites. Either way, I can't say I didn't have fun with this because I definitely did. If you can add in some battle animations for the enemies and perhaps a bit more detail to the backgrounds (the parallax was nice I must say) I think you'll have a winner here. So far, this looks very promising and I actually am looking forward to a new demo. Good job brother, 7/10

I'm a bit curious as to why you believe it's not that good. I always appreciate constructive criticism and feedback, sooo yeah.
The outline of the story is the first paragraph of the description. XD
Yeah, the depth issues are really starting to get to me and I'm gonna have to either make a whole new block sprite with the 3-D part of the block attached to it, as the 3-d part of the block is actually a seperate object.
The sprites are also getting to me, so I'm going to definantly be changing the enemy sprites. Though it may be time consuming, it will have to be done. I'm actually hoping to find someone capable of spriting some enemies for me, so that I can continue programming the game, as designing graphics isn't my place of expertise, being honest. ^^;;
As for the enemy attack animation, I'm going to have to mess with it a bit, as I'm going to have to find a better way to do the enemy attacks.

I GREATLY appreciate everyone's feedback, and it's definantly helping me towards improving the game itself!

if you use just about anything with the random encounters the game glitches and tries to use a "non-existing surface" for the object obj_char_ctrl action #4 of the draw event
V commented August 10, 2008 at 2:28 AM
That, I have never EVER encountered before hyper. It could be something with your computer, I dunno. But whatever it is should be fixed in the next update.

"You wake up in a strange place with floating blocks everywhere"

Then you could end the story with waking up from the dream. Now THAT would be a head turner.
Nighthawk commented August 10, 2008 at 8:10 PM
Ugh, but I hate those endings where "you wake up and it was all a dream". It renders the whole story meaningless, since it never really happened, and it seems like such a cop-out rather than coming up with an ending that's actually good.
V commented August 10, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Oh hell no, I despise an ending like that. I can bet you that isn't going to be the ending, as I got so pissed off when I beat mario 2. >_<
Cesar commented August 11, 2008 at 7:44 AM
well I despise waking up in a strange place where everything is different and you just have to save the world.

It makes me feel that the world is useless and deserves to die, so it makes me not want to play the game and instead try and let the NPCs die a horrible death.

A few minutes after <<^^>>, the game ended and all the villagers died (betcha don't know what game that's from =D)
V commented August 11, 2008 at 3:07 PM
There'll be a back story to it, I promise. >_< It won't be some abrupt having to wake up and save the world thing, it'll be a gradual shift showing how he wound up in this.
