Help needed!
Posted on May 13, 2017 at 08:22

I am using Windows 10 and Game Maker 8. Problem is "Saving Executable" when I press "Run" to run game, it takes TOO LONG to run it, even if I just have an empty room. What should I do?

:/

Is your project on an SSD or an HDD? I learned that my hard drive was failing because of this happening to me. Saving (GM:S 1.4 at the time) took minutes. Put it on my SSD and it was fine. Turns out my HDD was just dying, all file ops on it were slow as hell.

I really hope someone would find a solution, this is really annoying. Used it before on Service Pack 3 and worked well. Why would it have problems on Windows 10? I don't get it.

Have you been able to try it on a different machine? Idk, I don't use GM8, but I don't think Windows 10 would cause a problem here.

This is more along the lines of a system problem, not GM. I'm able to use GM 7 and up fine on Windows 10 without any tweaking.

Try follow some basic troubleshooting steps:
> Run a full scandisk. From an elevated command line (Win+X, A) run chkdsk c: /R
This should trigger Windows to schedule a boot-time scan. Restart and let it run through. If it freezes up in any way or has way too many errors, your HDD is likely dying.
> Uninstall and Reinstall Game Maker, this one is a bit of a "But that's too simple to work" solution, but give it a shot anyway.
> Check your antivirus. Some of them like to silently stop 'compilation-like' activity from programs (Like GM), and GM doesn't know what to do when handling these situations. Especially Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky... hell, even Avast and AVG tend to do it.

Yeah, that was about antiviruses... But in my situation it was "Windows Defender"

Now it's working! I will turn it off only while making a game :D
