I thought this game was pretty fun early on, but it has quite a list of bugs, glitches and flaws.

Let's start off with the good, it has a simple and decent story, fun and addictive gameplay, great music, good retro style graphics, great atmosphere and the game made me want to play it through the end.

I enjoyed looking through chests and such and i loved the feeling of finding bullets and health. Very addicting.

but, here's the list of the bad. It's absolutely swarming with glitches and bugs. Especially on the final part where you get to the final building.

Sometimes monsters wouldn't chase you anymore after you've jumped over them and they'll just sit there, not moving until you shoot them.

Sometimes, I'll get stuck in slopes and can't move until after I pressed the jump button a few times, this was especially annoying when enemies are chasing you, and it also happened to me in the introduction cutscene when facing the final boss, I couldn't move, so I could only jump into his attack and he'd just kill me over and over. Which is a BIG flaw, someone could save when they're on that part, not realizing that once they try to move, they can't do anything in time and they'll be forced to restart the game all over again because the final boss will kill them over and over.

Speaking of the boss, at one point, when he begins doing his final attack where he'd throw spikes at you or whatever, he went to the upper left hand side of the room, where I couldn't reach him, and he'd just sit there jerking around, stuck in the corner and I couldn't kill him, so I was forced to kill myself. Which was frustrating especially when you've wasted your time to get up to that point.

Also, I disliked the fact that when you begin fighting the final boss, your health doesn't replenish or your bullets. It's pretty annoying starting off with only 2 health, which got me killed in one hit every time I died. and at one point I completely ran out of bullets and I had to kill myself because the boss doesn't drop any bullets or health.

One more thing about the boss is that his final attack is sometimes unavoidable, he'd just trap me in a corner with his spikes and he'd rise up to a height where I couldn't shoot him from, so I only had two options, get hurt by his spikes or die in one hit when he swoops down and kills me. Which just feels like the game is cheating me and it's acting like it's my fault that I can't kill him when he's all the way above me, touching the ceiling.

and the vampires/bats or whatever were boring enemies to fight and felt like they took too many bullets. I thought they were a waste of time and effort to fight, so I'd just rushed past them.

Another thing about the bats, at one point, one of them tried to get me and it flew out of the room and never came back, I don't know if you programed them that way or what. but, yeah.

I also thought that the game felt like it was rushed on the second half of the game, where it looks like you could explore more of the world, but for some reason there is an invisible barrier blocking the way. I'm going to use the stairs in the man in the woods' house as my example, I thought I could go down the stairs, but then there was just some invisible barrier in the way which made me float in mid air.

and I found some of the backtracking on the last part a chore, instead of being fun, it felt like it just made the game unnecessarily long, but I won't count this as a flaw seeing as almost all retro games do this at some point.

One more thing is the ending, I found it quite disappointing and unsatisfying, I just died 15+ times just to read 2 boxes of text then the game just says "the end". Which, to me felt like a rushed ending.

Overall

A fun, and addicting game that starts off strong, but doesn't end the same and there are quite a lot of flaws and glitches. some of them can ruin the experience, but these issues can be forgiven due to the fact that it makes you want to play the game to the very end.

thanks for the feedback JID, that's the best feedback i've gotten so far =D

The game was rushed, after all it was part of a short competition. in fact it disappointed me so much that i didn't get to turn this into something bigger. i had so many more ideas for what i wanted this to be but it ended up so short.

however at the same time i was incredibly happy with the little world i created so much that i have plans for expanding this idea into a full-length adventure.

there are bugs and i wish i had the time to fix them, luckily i do now and i might just do that once i can get some free time. (the semester is coming to an end next week so hopefully soon!)

as for the final boss, i didn't really experience too many problems while testing him. he adjusts his height based on your position so if he flys to high, just stay low and wait for him to fly downward. also you can destroy the spikeballs (i think?) lol

i had a much different idea of what i wanted the ending to be but the ending text was put in literally 1 day before the comp was over lol. it was gonna be much more bizarre, the reaper was supposed to open up a portal to another world and you would jump in after him like a maniac and than... yeah never mind xD

EDIT: also i had the plan of him dropping ammo if you ran out but... i never got around to adding it.

if you had more time, i can tell that this would've been a much better game. I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot, which is why i was so disappointed when the game didn't allow me to access parts of the game very randomly.

I really wish the game was much bigger than it was. There was so many possibilities, but I felt the second half of the game was just trying to push me out.

With that said, I'm looking forward to the full length adventure and some of the other games that you'll make in the future. =D

Actually pretty bad-ass! I actually played this one for a long time. I'm stuck at the moment, but that's my fault for missing something I need to find. Addictive like a gameboy game.

Hey there death!,

This is an amazing pixelized horror game.

9/10!

I was really wondering how you did the lighting, could you upload the source code, or upload an example of how you did it.
Thanks in advance!
