Our 7drl for 2017

Hi Everyone

My wife and I participated in the 7drl this year and finished the project just in time, feel free to check it out here at itch.io https://littlebear.itch.io/derelict and tell us what you think.

She wanted to work on her drawing skills and I wanted to write more than code this year so we did something a bit different, we made a text-based roguelike. Here is some of the art, any comments welcome.

Any comments welcome.

Pretty neat little game :). I like the general mood and concept, the music was well chosen and I liked the artwork quite a bit - it's reasonably detailed (especially considering the time frame) and I like the soft kind of ambiently lit sort of look.

In case you keep working on it here's my more detailed thoughts :).

Considering what you say about possibly making the game have a darker tone, I think the art style could work against it a bit unless the lighting becomes more detailed and shadowed - perhaps during the combat sequences and the darker moments of the story, the images could invert? - could be pretty striking. Or maybe a bit of image grain could be interesting too, idk XD.

Gameplay wise, I found that after around room 12 the puzzles repeated pretty frequently, although I can put that down to the time limit. And yeah expanding the combat system couldn't hurt (I also found a bug, the message saying how much health the enemy has just says they have hHP XD), a map could be interesting too :).

In regards to the writing I think a lot of the ideas are well done, and I like how frequently and nonchalantly new concepts are introduced - however there are a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes which do detract from the mood a bit. I'd be happy to proofread if you do any further revisions, if you want :).

Hope that's helpful! :)

@spike Thanks for the input and the detailed feedback. I don't know if we are going to work on it any more, no one has hinted to them wanting us to continue with it so for the comp entry I see it as finished.

I'm still learning about my grammar and spelling mistakes, hopefully my writing skills will keep improving.

Thanks again for taking the time to play and give great feedback!
