The dream project

Posted by aeron on Feb. 6, 2014, 2:46 a.m.

Hey all, got an open ended question for you. Say you had all the time and resources in the universe at your disposal. Anything's possible. You get to choose one project to start/revive and see all the way through to completion. What would you choose and why?

In before short blog, I'm treating this as an open ended discussion. Think of it as your ideal/pet/dream project, that one thing you've always wanted to make but it just hasn't fallen into place yet due to constraints, whatever they may be. You can refer to a specific project or just describe something general you want to aspire to.

I'm pretty sure most of us have one (or two or three) of these lingering in our minds, so if you'd like to share, I encouraged you to leave a comment or dedicate a blog to it. I know I'm not the only one who'd be eager to read it and give feedback.

Minecraft, but with physics.

In other words, you can build physical objects out of cubes, in a first person view. You can build houses that can collapse if you don't build them with appropriate supports. You can build giant ships that can sink if you tear a hole in the side and break apart as they're pulled under. You can crash blocky cars together and examine the destruction.

Well, as for the supports thing, there's a mod called TerraFirmaCraft that adds that feature, along with a lot of interesting survival elements.

I would also improve upon minecraft by allowing for subdividable blocks. You change the size of the block you're placing by using the scroll wheel. This would also allow you to place a giant cube and then slowly begin to carve out finer and finer details until you're left with a very detailed sculpture.

There was a mod that did this really well. MinePainter, I think. Allowed you to chisel pieces out of most blocks, copy sculpted patterns with templates and place the little fragments you get from the process.

Of course, having these features built directly into such a game would be great, but very difficult to pull off in a way that would leave the game playable for the majority of people.

A 3D single player open-world exploration game with unique environments, massive array of highly interactive vehicles with an in-depth and advanced physics engine. I love love love vehicles that you not only take control of, but can walk around in as they move, with appropriate physics. Think of vehicles in Halo such as the Elephant from Halo 3, the Scarab and The Longsword from Halo: Custom Edition. Now apply that concept to several different types of vehicles (baloons, spaceships, boats, submarines, trains, hang gliders, etc) and my dream game would be complete.

Think of something like Journey meets Planetside 2.

I want to finish my game Pokemon: Cursed Black along with other creepypasta integrations (like a 2-in-1 type of game where this gets coupled with Lost Silver). In the version I'm making right now, there is no catchable Pokemon and only use ghost. Here's a video of the game earlier in development when I was so delusional with how much time I had and I WANTED to add all 251 from Gen II.

If I'm going to talk about my actual dream project: It would be an actual realization of fightboyfight, not the prototype tech demo I carry around with me on my flashdrive. A totally customizable action game with customizable zombies, characters, weapons… everything. Basically, I give you the tools to build your own perfect zombie game though a pre-made story made with the same tools players get to use… a la LittleBigPlanet.

And an intergalactic space life simulator where you do literally whatever you want to do. Sort of like a 2.5D EVE Online but faster paced and less of a focus on multiplayer. I want the player to feel the isolation of space, as well as the infinite possibilities of the universe, but not have to wait 4 hours to actually do something in the game.

I would make an AI engine capable of being used to create entire universes (or at least a planet), and I would make one. (Not sure what I would make, but it would be fantastical with magic and stuff)

It would also all be done in GM on a pc that wouldn't be planet sized.

why would you pick GM for that?

Moikle: No real reason. Its just what I'd use.

If I had infinite time and resources~

I've had a game in my head for a while that I'd would make. Ice cave "sandbox" survival rougue-like with well fleshed out battles and many many complex details and interactions within the world and lots of content. Assuming I had infinite time, I would make it online multiplayer just cause I can but If I ever give it a try IRL, it'll probably just be single player. Also, loads of content, tons and tons of content, in case that wasn't specific.

@PK:

Wouldn't it be worth using c++ or something assuming you had infinite time? That way you are held back by GM's low speeds.

I'd make my RPG. If I had infinite time and resources, I'd keep working on it forever until I'm satisfied.
