Nebraska Newton Devlong #6 - "Levels"

Hello and welcome PY and Cpsgames! Also hello and welcome to you other peoples. Today's devlog will be a little different, seeing as I've run out of stuff to make lists of. Here goes…

Prologue

Levels can make or break a game. This is because levels ARE the game. Level design is hugely important, and I hope I pull it of well.

Chapter 1 - "Focus"

The levels will all be focused around solving puzzles, and killing enemies with as little ammo as possible. That's why you'll be able to trap enemies with such things as gates, lava, and spikes. They're not just there to hurt/hinder you!

The ladder gun will be introduced fairly early on in the game, and it'll become a vital tool, instrumental in the solving of many puzzles, least of all the "hole in the ceiling you have to get through" puzzle.

One thing you can never rely on is speed. Your guns are slow, Nebraska is slow (he's too boring to be fast). Enemies WILL catch up with you.

Chapter 2 - "Overview"

At the moment, I'm planning to give the game 10 levels, including the tutorial level and the final boss level. At the moment I have 5 levels, 4 of which are complete. Better make more!

All the levels are the same size, about nine times the screen resolution (640*480). It's a good size, and allows for large levels with lots of obstacles and enemies. That's a good thing, seeing as I may not have been able to fit the entire game into 10 small levels.

Chapter 3 - "Goals"

I'll be honest with you, I didn't complete my goals. I did everything except putting in the gate and the bullet redirectors. Because I forgot. *slaps forehead*. Ah well, today's a new day.

Goals For Today

* Put in gate and bullet redirectors. Because I forgot to last time.

* Finish unfinished level. It's been sitting in its unfinished state for days. I need to wrap it up.

* Make/start on three levels. Those are all the normal levels I still need. If I finish them all today, that'll be level design practically finished.

Epilogue

Thanks for reading! As you can see, the game is progressing nicely. Things are going well, and chances are I'll finish it in time. Hooray for that!

Yep. I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it, but it now looks like I'll finish this on time.

Okay, so unfortunately I only managed to start on ONE new level today. That was because:

1. I downloaded a lot of games yesterday.

2. The bullet redirectors took longer than I thought they would.

3. Cold computer room (with fan on to dry washing!) between 11 and 12:40 AM (when it got warmer, and I was allowed to turn of the fan).

4. Load-shedding between 3 and 4 PM.

But I put in the gates and bullet redirectors (took a bit of doing, but they work now). So I'm not too far behind schedule.

Yes hurrah, I had a good game idea but I didn't bother making it, Iv'e never actually finished anything anyway.

You'll get there. Trust me. I started GM in February 2005. I released my first proper game in November 2007. Not sure how long you've been doing GM for, but you'll get there.
