I've been thinking about creating an own character like Nintendo's Mario, Sega's Sonic etc.

well you're better on pixeling than mee. I think that it's too late to do it now.
Making a character is not hard for me. It just has to appeal to the genre and situation. If you want to make good art and aren't a good artist, download GIMP.
