Man, I love emulators

Playing Final Fantasy XII in 1080p is amazing. It's crazy how much detail they put into the graphics, considering that you really can't notice much of it when the game runs at its normal resolution. The character models in particular.

And the DualShock to USB adapter and DualShock 2 that I bought on Amazon are working wonderfully. Feels like I'm playing a real PS2, only better!

The only problem is that PCSX2 is still a work in progress, so game compatibility isn't quite as robust as one might hope. But it'll run most games… It runs the Final Fantasy series perfectly, at full speed with plenty of speed to spare. It also runs the Persona series just as well. Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus, Yakuza, Odin Sphere, Zone of the Enders, Devil Summoner series and Fatal Frame III all play fairly well too.

The only games in my collection I've tried that simply don't work are Gran Turismo 4 and Steambot Chronicles. They run, but extremely slowly and with graphical glitches all over that render the game entirely unplayable. Hopefully future versions of PCSX2 and its plugins resolve these.

OH GOD IM GONNA DOWNLOAD GRAN TURISMO AND TRY TO GET IT RUNNING. I haven't played that game in SO long and I want #5 so bad. I luckilly also have a PS1 controller with the adapter to USB. ^_^

Well. Gran Turismo 1 and 2 run perfectly on ePSXe…

The controller works with PS2 emulators too. ^_^

How is it able to work? There is no Emotion engine, how is that even possible. THE FRIKING PS3 COULDN'T HANDLE SOFTWARE EMULATION AND THAT WAS FROM SONY!

Um well my laptop is a bit more powerful than a PS3…

And maybe Sony could do software emulation on the PS3 but simply don't care to do so.

Suck to be them.

Didn't the PS3 *have* software emulation? It certainly had backwards compatibility to begin with, which was removed.

Of course, why would they have any sort of backwards compatibility when they could charge you to rebuy old games!

The original NTSC model PS3s had a built-in emotion engine and could perform hardware emulation, the original PAL models (and second line of NTSC) had software emulation, that's the model I have.

I like to use the PS3 controllers if I'm emulating games, don't need any adapters, just plugs in with a USB to Mini-USB cable and there are free drivers for it.

For the most part I don't really emulate much, the PS3's emulation of PSX and PS2 is fine, but I still have a PS2 lying around just in case either the PS3 or my PC doesn't want to emulate a game.

I thought about getting a DualShock 3, but buying a DualShock 2 and USB adapter was nearly $25 cheaper. Plus Windows recognized the adapter and automagically installed appropriate drivers, so no manually hunting drivers down like I'd have to do for a DS3.

The main reason why I emulate PS2 and PSX is because being in the Navy, it's not very practical to haul a TV and a bunch of consoles around with me. Having a laptop that's able to play my games is just so much more convenient.

There are other pretty nice benefits for emulating though… Higher resolution for improved graphics is one reason, and it's also pretty convenient to be able to play all my games from ISOs instead of having to mess with my physical copies.

I have to say I do emulate a fair few PSX games even with a compatible PS3 (or even the PS2) mainly cause then I can just rip the game to a ISO then just play it w/o the disk, which is nice cause I had probably over a hundred PSX games back in the day, but by now most of them have suffered from attrition over the years, so it's nice to be able to make images of them.
