Nothing Good Here

Posted by Ninji on April 15, 2013, 1:59 p.m.

There was a reason my mom was stalling and hiding my laptop from me. Not only is my backup flash drive gone, but the computer I've been working on is completely wiped because some dipshit repair guy (wonder if I can sue). My art, my gamemaker files, all completely and irrecoverably gone.

Don't feel like I can keep doing this, it's not the first time freak circumstance has ruined me, don't feel like I got any place here, because the one thing I have to offer is gone. I thought I could stand against lazy, greedy game developers, and make games that people enjoy, but after loosing majinn anything that takes less than months would just feel lazy to me.

Crybaby blog, but crying takes a lot less effort than trying to erect Babylon. Fell off my horse, shot it in the back of the head, and if I don't drown myself in the mud maybe I can attempt to do this crap again some day. Fuck this, I need a job. Fuck a job, I need an IV drip of vodka.

Requiscat en parch, Majinn. In case you guys where wondering this is what it looked liked, well before the graphics updates anyway.

But most importantly, this is what Majinn is now

Actually I know what to do, some of this shit is backed up in the hardrive god gave me after all. I won't be able to show myself for a long time however if I had to restart, unless I decide to start posting art, or if I actually got a job.

Peace out people I hardly know, I'll live, not that I will be back for a long time Oh btw small bitchy blog is small, but I figure people have the right to know when they come on my page seeing all this crap I go on and on about.

Generally when it goes in for repair you sign a liability waiver for your data, so no.

It's a real shame you've lost all your work. But imho, you shouldn't give up.

Did you have any accounts on any website that'd allow you to back up your work?

I've lost entire folders of games literally 8 or 9 times. Most, if not, ALL my work would be lost, but I cannot count how many times I'd go on tons of different website accounts and miraculously find backups that are a few months old - but hey, at least i didn't lose ALL my work.

That game actually looks pretty cool and it'd be a real shame to give up on it, especially if you have backups of it.

and a little suggestion to prevent something like this from ever happening again:

Dropbox

When downloading this, it'll install a folder on your pc, and all you have to do is drag files into the folder and like magic, that file is backed up. :P

There's lots of utilities that you can use to attempt to restore data from a Windows format. I've done it before.

Stop using your laptop right away though, and find somewhere you can plug it in as a secondary drive.

Yeah I just recently started using dropbox for CheeseMod, I just put the actual source folder in the dropbox folder so I don't even have to remember to back it up. I also started putting it up on bitbucket which is like github but provides private git repositories instead of requiring public, although I'm not sure how it would work with GM.

I don't see why bitbucket wouldn't work fine with GM, although I can speak from experience that it can be a little sketchy with GM:Studio. You'd think that having each resource in it's own text file would make it perfectly compatible with git but for some reason I was having issues with resources being placed in the wrong folder making them appear corrupted in the IDE after a pull. But regardless, source control is indispensable once you learn to use it, and by using a remote hosting service such as bitbucket you can back everything up to their server with a simple git push origin master.

I've never found anything letting me recover ghost files that aren't standard formats, and even ones that let me currupt the GM files. Plus I think windows 7 was wrote over some of the data (since it's not always in order, hence a need for defrag).

Woefully I didn't sign no waiver, my mom did, and I have no intention of suing my mom.

I'm going to be real anal about backing up now, and when I do something like complete an entire complicated attack system in a game I'd be making several backups.

Half the work was my enemy ai though, and I have plans of globalizing it into several categories now, like on foot enemies, flying ones, and several common routines being script calls that lots of enemies can use. That way with a few extra sprites and tweaks I can easily give enemies new techniques in harder levels.

Even Mystical Ninji (dun look into it unless u like to martyr yourself to shit) had plenty of globalize routines, so one call can tell an enemy when to use melee attacks, or whether it's safe to go off a ledge and they all go off the same random number seeds. I was so focused on the playable character I neglected to fit everything together for majinn's enemies.
