Working on a remake... and my comp entry.

Greetings! (or whatever you expect a blog post to start with).

Being an attention-seeker, I want to show off some stuff I've been working on. First of all, some character sprites for my RPG comp entry:

I've realized I'm probably not gonna complete all stuff I want in it 'til beginning of august, so I'm currently brainstorming a new, simpler plot that allows me to get away with talking and turning around as the only stuff that happens in cutscenes. I also want to make a game that can load in expansion packs later, and perhaps I'll even make a "make your own quest" add-in. Interesting business… I'll see how much time I can pour down.

As those sprites suggest, I'm working on a Final Fantasy Tactics Advance-style Tactics jRPG. It's been really fun to write an isometric graphics engine in Game Maker, I recommend everyone to try it out at least once. The sprites show off a few generic characters (female Berserker, Penguin Cop, Witch, Miko) and the current protagonist, the titular Daemon Detective. I'm having some trouble getting his game-art to look as cool as he should be, so perhaps I'll make another game instead of Daemon Detective just so I can use some cooler character. (Plus, since I've been planning to make this game since 2008, I want to make it perfect! I'm not really sure the comp deadline allows it)

==========================

Oh, and I've been working on converting my SMB1 remake to 2½D graphics.

If you're interested in looking up a really glitchy demo with lots of authentic Super Mario Bros levels and six playable characters (Mario, Luigi, Sonic, Amy, Knuckles and Curly Brace), it's right here: DOWNLOAD LINK

But, as said above, it's work-in-progress, the conversion process is by no means complete so there are some graphical surprises hanging around.

It doesn't suggest that.

Yeah. It took a bunch of tries to get the broomstick right. =P

I want to have a fun battle system and I got the idea that I gotta have flying units that can fly over anything (so enemies can't lock you into a corner) and can ignore height differences.

Oh, gameplay-wise the game will be more like Disgaea (in fact, it has both Counter-Counter-Counter-attacks and lifting/hurling this far) but the style will be more like FFTA isometric. Mainly because it's easier to render, and I'm better at working in this graphical style.

Also I'm going to use a system where you can customize your characters infinitely, basically it's the badges from Paper Mario except you can permanently absorb them. You can also convert fallen enemies using some depleteable resource, and any unit can equip anything. E.g. you can give a bat a broadsword. It won't be good at wielding it initially, but if you tweak its stats enough it can beat most human swordsmen halfway trough the third dungeon.

As for the 2½D… thanks! I'm actually on the verge of dropping the project, but then I got the idea to make a silly graphical gimmick, and it's really given me new energy. The project's likely gonna be on hiatus a few months due to the RPG competiton, though.
