Another Music Challenge

Posted by pounce4evur on Dec. 27, 2012, 4:38 a.m.

Hey guys. I just wanted to throw this out there, and see who's interested in, or has time for a music composition competition. Of course, this one would (hopefully) be a lot more organized than the last one, and I'll actually have time to sit down and judge this one, because I don't need to do Wintermester, seeing as I passed all my classes.

GIMME SOME IDEAS.

Deadlines

-January 5th (Start Date)

-January 22nd (Deadline)

Time Cap

Don't intentionally try to kill us with a 20-minute piece. If your piece runs a little long, that's fine, but please be aware of the fact that we've got to sit through and analyze every bit of your composition.

Theme

The theme is now Mystery!

**Decided to change this to a challenge, because coming up with a ranking system for music is really difficult and could prove to be unfair. Each piece will receive individual feedback, but will not be ranked or compared.

**********************************

EDIT:

Here's a list of the entries that have been posted thus far. I am posting ALL of the links that you guys have given us. If you want to scrap a piece, update/edit it, or don't want it to be critiqued, let me know.

What metallic instrument are you using around 1:00? It sounds great.
That's a berimbau put through a comb filter (the wet signal is also clipped through a side-chain).

I could do without the ear-raping sample at the end too :P.

First of all, it's been a month. I suck. If you don't wanna hear my feedback by now, I'll completely understand. But I feel like this needs to be finished.

Steven's Going to Kill Me

I love the opening. It sounds sad, but it's not a slow self-pitying kind of sad. It's still moving along. Piano's consistently been a good choice for this theme, paired with various string/percussion instruments. 0:24 interests me because the chords feel back-and-forth, in a cool way. Major to minor, back to major. Ah, cool strings. I'm not familiar with string instruments so I can't identify it, but I love that they're not the loud and shrill, in-your-face violin sounds I'm used to. Background strings are always my favorite. Ooh, bells! I'm officially a sucker for auxillary percussion instruments. They just make everything better somehow. The low strings at 1:37 remind me of the intro to this: Blue Strings. I hope you'll take that as a compliment–that's one of my favorite pieces. Overall, a great piece. I could definitely hear some elements of mystery in there, and the mood of it was maintained very well. Great job.

Tower of Illusion

Ha! Awesome. You just got right to it, no intro. I can't really name "instruments" in this kind of genre, so forgive me if I'm being vague, but there's some very light synth on the upbeats in the background that I really like. The rhythm of your (bass line, I guess?) is also very clever! It's pretty much acting as a percussion beat, on top of the one you already have. Man, your rhythms are just awesome! There's a voice just running up and down the scale starting at 0:34 that just adds even more dimension to this piece. You've also got a firm grip on the volume and progression of the piece as a whole, adding and removing voices at a very steady pace, while also maintaining the flow of the melody. Man, I didn't even mention your little harmony voice going on behind the melodic line. It's pretty genius, because it's so simple. It's a bit repetitive, but I think you were kind of going for that, so I can respect it. Aw, man! It's got "WIP" in the title, so I'm hoping you won't just allow the piece to fade out so quickly. If you ever go back to work on this piece, add an ending! Repetitive pieces shouldn't fade out without some kind of change. Overall though, very nice! It didn't fit the mystery theme, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

The Avatrol

Now I'm really kicking myself for leaving this off for so long. I wish I'd given it a listen. Sorry about that, man. If you ever get the urge/have the ability to re-upload it, let me know!

Oooh. So far, this is definitely living up to its name. That is an amazing intro. It's like a bluesy Asian feel. It changes pace pretty quickly, but I kind of like that. It's got this uneven, bipolar kind of feel. Like you're chasing a madman through a monastery. You're on his tail, and then he vanishes around a corner and you're back in that peaceful state. Dude, I'm digging the background trumpet voice. It really adds the dimension of suspense, and the feeling that something action-y is going on in the piece. Your percussion is incredible. It's such a fast, crazy beat! It really contrasts beautifully with the calm flute and smooth guitar. The flute also adds that jazzy feel I was talking about. Auxillary percussion, yay! Cymbals and tambourines, and clavas, and I think I heard a wind chime? Awesome. You really spread them out well, too. Whoa, spoken words. What is he saying? Phase one, phase two, phase three. Something about a flower. That was incredible. I really wasn't expecting to hear spoken word appear in this piece. It caught me off guard in the best way possible. Brilliant. Honestly, if I could ask for anything, it'd just be for you to hold onto voices just a little bit longer. But you did an excellent job of maintaining the flow of the piece anyway; you have tremendous highs and calming lows. That just blew me away. It's very fast-paced, but still relaxing. I really don't have words for that. Great piece, man.

Hey cool, live instrument recording! Awesome! I thought that Kamira would be the only one submitting one. I guess I forgot somewhere in the past month…Anyway! While listening, I was drumming out a rhythm that would go along perfectly with the line you created. It's really a well formed melodic line, which may very well be one of the hardest aspects of composition. Very nice! I hope to hear more from you soon.

Awesome intro. The decrescendo made it stand out very nicely, and I like that you came back in with an even quiter volume. Damn! Your tone has gotten even better. This is definitely very well performed. Did you write this piano line yourself? It's really catchy. The composition for the euphonium itself is incredible, too. You're managing to maintain the piece with only two instruments, and you're keeping me just as entertained as a full orchestra would. These haunting, echo-ey lines are definitely mysterious. I'm especially loving the way that you gradually crescendo into them, allow these full notes to grow, and then decrescendo while still maintaining such a great tone, because I'm sure that your makeshift acoustics weren't too great and you still sound amazing. Ah! That ending! Awesome. I thought you'd end gradually, like the piece, but the ending was very clever. You've definitely improved your composition since the summer, and this was really fun to listen to. I'm glad that you decided to stay in band. It was clearly worth it.

Alright. I'll get on to the last one tomorrow. I've stayed up much later than I originally intended to, but I felt that this needed to be finished. Lesson learned: don't host challenges during school. Why the hell did I ever think that would be a good idea?

I really doubt that, you're just hearing me with a better mic and in a room with good acoustics for the first time. Thanks though!

Yup! I actually came up with those 2 bass lines just messing around on guitar a while back, and I found it works on piano too.

*tear* someone understands me. i was totally going for crazy chase theme music, but it seemed like my mom was the only one who got that XD
