Mac vs. PC

Posted by Infinity_Plus on Oct. 30, 2010, 11:53 a.m.

I've been seriously considering getting a Mac, since I just recently found out that GM is compatible with it, and that aside from making games in Game Maker, all I do is type documents and edit videos. Does anyone else here in the community use a Mac? I've always enjoyed their design but have avoided getting one because I thought that Mac's couldn't run GM, and that would have destroyed me.

…Now I wonder if Google Chrome is Mac compatible…

Just checked, yes it is.

Now I really want one. Buy me an iMac 27", 64D!

As always I love you guys.

Feel free to argue Macs vs. PC's below, if you like. I'm a fan of both :)

If all you do is type documents and edit videos, why fork out the cash for one of those overpriced paperweights? You can do just as much with a 500 dollar Windows/other rig as you can with a 2000 dollar Mac.

I never get why people say stuff like photoshop is better on the mac, it's the exact same program on a more expensive and limited computer. Also, if you use GM on a mac you can't expect it to work anywhere near as good as it does on Windows.

Macs are only decent (not really good) with the Macbooks. They have decent specs and aren't as ridiculously overpriced like the desktops are. Build your own rig mate, it's worth it.

it is not GM8, but 7 (meaning I can't import - and thus convert - games I made using GM8)

This actually killed it for me. I operate in GM8, and this would not work for me. Oh damn :)

That aside, I'm still interested in everybody's opinion on the Mac vs. PC debate.

FYI, to everyone that has stated I should build my own PC: I build PC's as a profession (and troubleshoot them, and I work on them where I'm employed). I currently have a custom built PC I made in 2005 and have upgraded as technology progressed. She's not much, but she gets me by.

I am, however, replacing my PC anyway, because I'm giving my current one to my girlfriend for either Christmas or our anniversary. My new build will cost me about $1500, so I was scoping out some other options, including the Macs, since I was already going to be spending about $1500 anyway.

TF2 on the Mac doesn't sound so good, Spoon. =(

Macs aren't very good value. Also, you can't legally build your own from scratch to save money, and the proprietary hardware costs more than it's worth. I run Windows 7 with no antivirus and it runs better than if it did have an antivirus program. Macs are for rich people, stupid people, and/or rich stupid people. It has some nice software, and I do like its inclusion of a terminal. If you want a Mac, build a Hackintosh, and stick it to the man.

I got a Macbook - at the time the model I have was introduced they matched similarly-priced Windows laptops spec-wise, so that was my justification.

As for compatibility I dual boot if I need a particular program osx doesn't have and use osx for everything else.

Also GM for Mac sucks, because unfortunately it was developed by YoYoGames.

In conclusion do whatever the fuck you want. Both mac, windows and linux suck equally.

Also I dislike all the stereotyping. As far as I see it, opinionated mac users are fat idiots and opinionated windows users are fat nerds. Those in between are of greater intelligence (and slimness).

I believe Qwilderwibben is thinking of the "No flash on the iPhone or iPad" controversy, which is only iOS. Flash runs fine on OSX.
OK, good, that's what I thought…

RoN is Mac compatible, too.
:O I did not know this.

get Hackintosh
Hackintosh actually works?

Just saying because I know someone who tried to put it as a partition, and it wiped out the rest of the hard drive somehow. :/

If it helps any, I'm typing this from the Windows side of a Macbook (because there's a few Windows-specific programs - i.e. GM8 - on this side).

@Toast: Where do opinionated Linux users fall in the spectrum? :D

All your base are belong to us.

In all seriousness though - I highly suggest you to buy a Windows machine, partition it, install a Crackintosh system to one partition and Windows to the other - that way you get the flexibility of Windows, and the… uh… uniqueness of Macintosh?

There are alot of programs that I would love to function on Mac, but there are no ports nor are there any alternatives, so I'm pretty much hanging out on my Windows 7 - plus, if you think about it, the hardware and software of a Macintosh is largely locked down.

Also, Macintosh believes that it's better than Windows in many situations - My friend, who I will call by "The Ninja" because he is a member of the Bujinkan, and someone who goes by the Ninja code of practice and ways, found out recently that there was a third-party application for Macintosh to DEFRAG the damn system.

You heard me right - Macintosh HAS NO FIRST PARTY SOFTWARE TO DEFRAG ITSELF.

Over the years, his Macintosh gathered that many file inconsistencies (and in general, lag) that he began to speak about it at College - one of my friends suggested to defrag it. That inspired him to find whether he could (He found out that he couldn't) and so that he had to turn to unlicensed "illegal" third-party OS modification software. What should have taken his Windows machine an hour at max, took his Macintosh to fix for an entire DAY and a half.

Now, I'm pretty sure Macintosh left out more than that in terms of functionality.

That happened because they fail at life. And remember, you can't install OSX on just any PC.
lol…maybe. XD

I don't know the exact specs of the PC they tried to put it on, so unfortunately I can't testify to that part…

In all seriousness, though, I've found using a Mac to be rather nicer than using Windows.
