Vista Transformation Pack 6 Final = Problem

Posted by Chirantha on Jan. 24, 2007, 12:55 p.m.

Well I found out about this Vista Transformation Pack 6 Final and I installed it following the instructions. But in the installation it was repeated that the Author is not responsible for any damages caused so for my safety I created a system restore point. And had the Norton Ghost CD ready just in case. I started the installation.

The installation went well and I found my self in a new UI (it was nice). Then my CPU started going to 100% and McAfee started to stop a script that was running and gave me alerts, it said the sidebar (with a new kind of clock, calendar things) was running a bad script and stopped and asked me if I wanted it to continue so I allowed it to continue. Soon I enabled this new type of bar where the system tray icon's showed up on it and it started using 100% CPU so I had to disable it as well. Then I went to sleep at around 4:30AM.

After four hours (9:00AM) I was awaken by my annoying UPS that rang an alarm when the power failed (The power was out for 9 hours to fix a stupid wire). So I had to get up and start the generator for the PC to run. I looked at the monitor and everything seemed to be ok. But when I started Opera the sidebar (with clocks and calendars) started using 100% CPU and then my entire PC froze for the first time in about 2-3 months so I had to restart it. I was kind of pissed so I decided to uninstall the Vista Transformation Pack 6 Final from my system. Then I started uninstalling it and it seemed to uninstall very well (no errors) then the system rebooted to complete the install. At first the UI seemed to be ok but when I opened Explorer I found the toolbar (back, forward buttons bar) was not restored (it was very small). So I said.. "uhhhh ok" and then I ran system restore to restore the PC but when it booted after system restore I was shocked to see that it wasn't able to fix it and I was like o.O.

I was down to my last and final resort to fix my PC. Well I had two options they were

1. Re-install my 8 month year old windows installation.

2. Use Norton ghost to restore my entire hard drive.

Well I wasn't going to take the trouble of reinstalling windows. So I used Norton Ghost CD to restore my C: Partition. But for some reason it restored my entire Hard Drive even though I specifically stated that ONLY C: should be restored (Weird eh?). Then when Windows loaded after the installation I found that D: was restored as well. I was kind of sad because I lost the files that were created in the last 31 hours. Even though I did have a Disk Image that was taken 4 hours ago I couldn't use it because that image already had the Vista Transformation Pack 6 Final software on it, you see everyday at 5AM Norton Ghost runs a backup on the Primary Disk and stores it in the secondary (Backup) Drive since the software was installed at around 2AM that day the 5AM backup was useless.

Well I thanked my self for buying a separate hard drive for backups. Norton Ghost sure comes in handy and if I did not have it I would have had to reinstall by entire system because of the stupid Vista Transformation Pack 6 Final. Well I can't blame the Author because he said it is not his responsibility.

So..

1. Make Daily Backups

2. Use Norton Ghost (even though Norton Anti-Virus sucks this doesn't)

3. Don't install Vista Transformation Pack 6 Final. If you did, you took the risk.

4. Make sure you have a few backups (the last backup wasn't useful for me)

5. Have one drive backup your Primary Drive (something like this or a hard drive failure CAN happen).

6. 20GB Drives even though small are VERY reliable compared to these big hard drives.

7. Never use your Windows Partition for storing your documents as you have read I planned on restoring my C: drive because all my documents were in the D: drive (even though it didn't work for some reason).

It's funny how much we all rely on computers these days. These are good hints, since many people don't even make backups. My computer crashed, everything was gone, and I was lucky I had a couple backups on disks.

Why would you go to all that trouble to skin Windows XP when Vista is so close to being released?

Here's the best tip for having a good computer:

Never buy premade computers from non-computer stores, eg, Future Shop, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. They all suck because they're loaded with shit software and hardware.

I do all of those except 20 Gig HD. I use a few big ones and a shitload of 2-5 Gigs that are backups

@FredFredrickson

Because I'd have to buy it.. = Money.. and Vista isn't going to cheap.

@Flying-Hippo

Well I dont say 20GB Hard Drives must be used for backups but yea it will be much safer to have the backups in a few 20GB drives. Also 20GB Hard Drive for the Documents = Very Good (less chance of Data Loss).
