Hey everyone!
It’s been a while, but something interesting came up in conversation today—I was reminded of the days when I used to dabble in game development. Since then, I've shifted my focus to web design and digital marketing, but curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to check on some of my old projects. That’s when I discovered that a lot has changed. GMS is no more—PlayTech sold everything to Opera a few years back, and now we have GameMaker.io as the current platform.I'm downloading it now to take a look and see what's new. For those who have used it, what do you think? Do you like it? Also, I’m guessing my old GameMaker 6, 7, 8, Studio, and .gmk files are probably obsolete now, right? Too much has likely changed for them to work. Would love to hear your thoughts.
it's a decent platform, you do see the odd successful game in it
They showcase some neat stuff on GameMaker.io, but it's not quite a platform for you to upload your own creations like the old YoYoGames site was (if I remember correctly) - for that, you'd might be better served with something like itch.io.
Hilariously, the GMC forum still exists in some weird capacity - though I guess it still sees more use than 64digits!I'm fairly happy with the modern GameMaker - it sees active development, and there've been a lot of improvements to the scripting language. After that big drama with Unity, they decided to make the free license for GameMaker honestly really solid. As for your old projects, modern GameMaker can import .gmx games from Studio 1, but for things older than that you'd need to first import the gmk/gm80/gmwhatever into GameMaker Studio 1.4. A *lot* has changed under the hood, of course, so you'd have to make a bunch of changes to get an old project running in the new GameMaker.
