Gamemaker is a game!

…and a good one aswell.

Let me explain why I claim that Gamemaker is a better game than most games created with it. It was yesterday when I read

Chris Crawford, The Art of Computer Game Design. that it struck me.

Gamemaker has many of the key features that makes a good game. Here are a few examples: The main motivation for playing a game is learnig and improving your skills, if you compare gamemaker with most games gamemaker is totally dominant. The problems are creative, there is no right way or atleast there is not only one way to solve a problem which make the "game" non linear. Feedom or non linarity is a factor that is behind the succes of many modern games like GTA or the Sims.

Another key ingredient that makes gamemaker a good game is personal confirmation. 64 digits play a large role improving the gameplay of gamemaker by letting you prove yourself against other and collaborate with others.

Let's consider highscores, in some games it's easy to achive the main goal and after that the only challenge left is imroving your score. With gamemaker this could be seen as you sloved a problem, now all you can do is rewrite the code into smarter faster solutions. But there is another dimension to gamemaker that I cant make out in any other games although it is a key factor to why gamemaker is fun and challenging. Here is the pitch -a production in gamemaker is compiled by x number of problems that need to be solved, and the solutions all have to work together in order to finish the game.

Well compadres…. is gamemaker a game?

Thats an interesting perspective. The challange is making the game, the reward is people liking it or at least telling you how to improve it.
