Independent Gaming Convention 2009

It was amaaaazing.

Loved the awards section. People up on the stands were yelling and ripping their shirts off. Anyone play Cortex Command? That guy was a genius, and he's totally ripped. If I were there, I'd totally swoon and make sure he sees it, too. I really do love that game.

I've decided to cancel Polish. on account of it already being bested by Iji, last year. It was everything I wanted my game to be. Why be a labeled copycat?

So, I got thinking about racing games. Yeah, I know. "Gee whiz, Tony, how do you go from platform games to racing games? Are ya gonna be a fag about it and make another Sonic remake?"

The answer is HEWL NAW. I'm going 3D with Blender and crap, and I'm stepping out of Game Maker for this one. Crazy, I know, but have you ever played a game called "Whiplash" by Interplay? Jesus, that was the pinnacle of racing games.

My challenge is to recreate the fun in that game, with tracks having crazy loops and corkscrews and stuff like that while retaining its "wow" factor. I'm thinking about programming a robot that "edits" the parts to make them more interesting every third lap, like missing floors and have them on fire, or something awesome like that.

Don't think I'm not doing platformer games, anymore! I'm creating a Global Awareness game featuring a chubby treehugger in a freaking PELICAN HAT.

FUCK YES A PELICAN HAT.

<where big companies would put the <sarcasm> tag>

I think we're done with aliens-on-earth action games, amirite? We need HIPPIES AND PELICAN HATS WITH CARS GOING IN LOOP-DE-LOOPS, NOW.

<sarcasm>

I'm a gaming Nostradamus, clearly.

I don't want to fuck a pelican hat. :(

Uh, I read that wrong.

A pelican hat you say?

I loved whiplash! That game was excellent - especially in multiplayer.

So, you scrapped Polish because of it "copying" Iji, and now you're making a game that "copies" Whiplash?

KNZone2 15 years ago

Yep, I'm copying Whiplash.

Hey, Flaker. Look, if you're negatively viewing people for copying an aspect of a type of game, you might as well eliminate any game you have on your favorites list. It's like saying that you dislike platformers made by people who have their characters jumping because the characters are jumping, and that's just not original!!! Mind, I've seen games where the jumping is different, but there's nothing that can stop a platformer from getting in the air.

I could just not make a game that has loop-de-loops and just flat circles, but then I'd be copying pretty much every OTHER racing game. Do you see how winning your approval would be impossible? Can I really win? I can't make them fly, it's just an airplane racing game. Diddy Kong Racing, anyone? Can't go underwater, that's just a gimmick used in too many games, still!

Whiplash never had a track that plunged you into a black hole, though. It was creative, but I can still have original things. This isn't my point, however. Flaker, you're a cool guy, and all, but I think you're looking at games the wrong way. I mean, creativity is encouraged, I support that, but to the point where you can't even be inspired by another game, can't remake an uncommonly-used aspect, is just accepting an impossibly pessimistic attitude.

I really didn't wait these months to hear on my blog that you hate the fact that a game inspired me to make something. I'm sorry, I must voice my opinion on that. No game developer hasn't been inspired by another game developing team. The only person I can recall who never had an inspiration for a game, not a single aspect, was the wizard who created "Tennis for Two." He made a sports game, so he doesn't even win. Nobody wins at this impossible game. Not even you.

I understand that I said that I wanted to be different. Making a 4-dimensional fusion of platforming, tactical real-time strategy games, and role-playing elements into a plot about stealing Europe's crowns is a cool concept that also happens to be yet another side project of mine, but you can't seriously label me as "unoriginal" for being inspired by a relatively old game while being fair about a secondary option that I could also take. If there was one without just dropping the game, I'd go for it, but until then, a racing game with loop-de-loops and black holes is (comparitively and relatively) original, and more importantly, FUN enough for me.

======END OF LONG RANT======

Desertfox: I played the game too late. Nobody was playing it when I started. It was around 2004. I want to experience the multiplayer stuff as best as possible, though, so I'm reducing polygon count to increase the number of people who can play. I think it's a cool idea if I execute it well enough.

I will do everything in my power to ensure that your vision becomes a reality and that aliens-on-earth action games never again see the light of day.

KNZone2 15 years ago

With your powers combined I'M CAPTAIN NO-ALIENS-ON-MY-PLANET!

I ought to have looked at this again sooner, but I kinda forgot.

I didn't mean what you thought I meant. I know that everything is inspired by something else, and I know that complete originality is nigh-impossible. Hell, I agree with your entire rant.

I was merely pointing out the irony in you cancelling a game because of its similarity to another game, and then going on to talk about a new project on the basis of its similarity to another game. Perhaps that wasn't what you were doing, but that's what it looked like to me.

Speaking of irony, it's ironic that my comment was actually intended to make the same point as your rant, albeit in an ambiguous fashion. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
