Steven Universe

I've been watching this show for a few months now, and I gotta say. It's amazing. It's honestly better than Adventure time. And the last two episodes? WOW.

If you haven't seen it, I really recommend it if you like Adventure Time, or even MLP. It's only one season and each episode is around 10 minutes. The main character might seem annoying to you (he certainly did to me), but I guarantee that you will grow to love him.

It's pretty much my favorite show at the moment.

I'm not going to tell you anything about it though unless you ask me. It'd be better to binge watch it. :P

My sister watched me watch an episode a few weeks ago, and she got instantly hooked as well. There's two more episodes left, and I couldn't be more excited. They aired a new episode every day this week. It's been awesome.

Connie reminds me of how I used to be when I was like in second grade. Well, without the starting a friendship with a magical person destined to defend the planet thing. :P

Second Steven Bomb is almost over. Today's episode was pretty great, but I still like Sworn to the Sword the most. That song was too great. Actually reminded me of Portal's "Want you Gone" in some parts.

Ok, trying to be brief, again.

I really like SU; I like the art style, I like the concepts behind it, I like the voice acting the character etc etc. However, the main reason I wanted to watch it was for the genuine character development and emotional stories that felt real.

Rebecca Sugars episodes in AT have been stunning, with "I Remember You" and "What Was Missing" being some of the best eps of AT. IRY featured some of the saddest character interaction in an animated show with fantastic music and art design to boot, while WWM had some great character development done in a way that perfectly fit in a 10 minute episode - simple plot with focus on getting the characters together.

I was expecting alot more of these sorts of moments from SU, which is why I'm both impressed and let down. The show is great apart from an incredibly lousy episode here and there (AT at least has an interesting world to fall back too, while SU just has humans at a beach in its bad eps), but compared to the eps that RS wrote for AT, I feel let down. I thought that the characters would be developed more subtly leading up to an incredibly collapse, with characters changing only after hitting rock bottom and being able to have multi episode character transformations. So far most character developing moments have been compressed into a single episodes, which I thought could be avoided since RS would have more control over SU.

As for SU being better than AT, I would agree were it not for the last 3 seasons of AT. They've really picked up the slack and reached similar levels as SU, but by having those past RS episodes along with it's crazy and tragic backstory I still feel AT wins by a bit. However, if SU has a few episodes of the highest caliber, then it'll definitely be better.

Also more songs, the songs have been lacking. My favorites are the one from Sworn to the Sword and In the realest way (Don't know the actual name). Need more songs aaaaah.

I'm a sucker for musicals XD

I've re-read and tried to rewrite this so many times but I can't find a way to express this without being incredibly verbose. Here's my attempt anyway….

Well, I just binge watched the entire thing twice over the last few days, and I'm not really sure what I think.

One part of me is incredibly impressed, while the other is somewhat let down. I'm not really sure how to explain it without going into paragraphs ( already wrote a full length one XD), but I'll try and keep it brief.

I expected "I Remember You"s and "What Was Missing"s (Incredibly emotional episodes that reveal alot about characters in graceful ways while smashing your heart all done by the creator of SU), when what I got was a lot of "The Coolers" and "Pajama Party"s( Revealing alot about characters in somewhat jolty ways with confused emotions of both sadness and annoyedness in how it was handled).

Some episodes were really good, particularly the ones with the kingergartens and basically anything to do with Rose, but I honesty think many of the others are 'meh'. They are higher quality than ATs, but they still feel 'meh' due to the world they inhabit. ATs world is an incredibly wacky one with such a tragic past, which helps make even the worst episodes still somewhat enjoyable, while SU just suffers with its boring… humans. SU relies a lot on making characters feel awkward for comedy, and is usually pretty predictable other than the great two-parters; AT is almost never predictable. I think the reason I'm so harsh on the others is because they feel so out of place. You have fantastic character based episodes with characters dealing with grief, but then you cut not only to a comedic episode (Which I'm ok with if done well), but one that relies of crappy cliches to half-assedly develop characters into more cliches - and then after that have a few random episodes while a threat still exists before finally getting back to the plot. Whenever AT does that it's on purpose because its mocking the cliches, and so far no massive threat has loomed over the episodes for ages without at least one reference to it each episode. SU feels even more confused than AT, while also not due to the ratios of good to bad; it's confusing.

If AT was still in its 3rd season I would agree that SU is a much better show, but in S5 and especially S6 AT has put a lot of effort into developing it's characters and producing thought provoking stuff. SU offers alot more ratio-wise, but what it offers has less impact than AT.

That being said, SU has so far given out a large number of quality episodes, an incredible number more than AT did in its first few seasons. The characters and world they inhabit are fascinating for the most part (Beach City just doesn't interest me at all), and after re-watching, the amount of foreshadowing in events and character behaviors really astounds me. I don't think the characters have ever acted too out of character, just not how you'd expect due to reasons you find out later. I really love the art style and find the harsh coloring in some parts to be a really cool design choice, and all the voice actors do a great job (Other than Peridots, not sure if it's quite right).

I know I sound negative, but I really like SU, and really want to keep watching. I just wish they would focus more on the plot based episodes than the random ones, since even though you still learn about the characters in them, they end up feeling cheap. I'd love a more emotionally strong episode like "I Remember You", but I've got a feeling it'll deliver one anyway later. I probably have ridiculous expectations since I'm cherry picking a couple of episodes out of a consistently bad AT (For the first few seasons), but since the creator of this show did them all, I find it hard not too. I don't think this made any sense but meh, trying to compress a 7 paragraph review is hard XD.

Bascially SU might maybe probably equal sort of AT's cherry picked episodes or not because confuse….

You made a comment that seemed very interesting to me. You mentioned that if it wasn't for the latest episodes of Adventure time, you'd think SU was better.

I actually think something a little different.

For me, it's BECAUSE of the newer episodes of AT that I think that SU is better. I've felt that AT has been going downhill for a while. I almost don't even care for the characters at all now. I find all those new episodes with existentialism and other similarly pretentious topics make for extremely boring episodes. I also find that WITH those themes, the episodes have started to use a "tell don't show" kind of approach to world building.

The funny thing is that I actually discovered SU completely by accident. I watched it practically blind except for some comments saying that people liked it, and that it was similar to AT. And that was waaay before any of the heavy episodes like On The Run or Ocean Gem ever aired. So it's safe to say that I wasn't expecting much at all when I started. That only made me love it all the more when I realized how great it was.

The only think I don't like too much is that weird relationship they keep reminding us about between Pearl and Rose. Before those episodes (and Jailbreak) pearl used to be my favorite. Occasionally she does things that make me forget how unlikable she gets when she obsesses over Rose, but then she does something that makes me remember. :(

Some very minor AT spoilers

I personally like the more artsy episodes, but I can understand why someone wouldn't However I still think it offers a lot more in other areas as well, with characters having development (In somewhat quick ways however but it still happens, with Finn, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline and Flame Princess all actually changing character somewhat after several events) a few new characters to shake things up like Orgalorg and Martin and more deserved jokes, as in not just random fart jokes.

I agree that its had a lot less fight scenes than previously, but I think thats all part of Finns development as a character. In the past he's had a lot more fun just killing things in dungeons, wheres now he's questioning a lot of things after being burnt by people and having burnt others several times. After the events of the the first few episodes of S6 he's felt pretty bumbed out, and this season was mostly about him and a few other characters just accepting the way some things and some people are instead of always pushing for self destructive change. That's how I see it anyway.

Now that that's over I'm fairly sure S7 will be a return to the days of old; from what I've read it's still going to have the mature stuff but the comedy will be better blended in so hopefully you'll enjoy it more then :).

As for Pearl and Rose, the flaws in all the characters are one of my favorite parts of SU, which is why I was hoping for more subtlety in their reveals, but meh. I'm beginning to think I have a bias towards depressing stuff……
