New to the Site

I'm pretty new to the site, and have clearly realized that every incredibly amazing game no matter how simple requires thorough knowledge of coding in gml and or perhaps other programing languages. I'm guessing the lot of you have read books on coding in gml and such, or have gotten your coding knowhow from other souces.

If anyone has any references, sources, or advice they could share that would be great, and I would be very greatful.

As other people have said, there's no (helpful) book on gml. After learning D&D, which takes no time, you might want to learn to code, it's really easy, despite seeming complex at first. It took me a while to accept that D&D can only go so far and that I'd eventually have to learn gml. If you don't get a good start on it, just look around the help files or tutorials on the internet.

Having said that, welcome to 64Digits!

D&D is the retard version of programming.

Well, there's The Gamemaker's Apprentice by Mark Overmars (maker of GM) and Jaccob Hargreaves (Hogs of war :O)

64Digits uses mind altering code.

'We aren't exactly… expert here. :('

Some of us are. Overall, we have greater expertise than the GMC.

Oh, except Ronnica. She doesn't know what a game maker is.

Welcome to 64Digits, mmmmkay?

GML just takes practice. No booking required.

64D should do something for the community, for once, and bang together some tutorials.

Yeah, I found that out. I've made one decent yet simple game and followed it through to the finish with the D&D method but your right Sinistrade it does only go so far, thats why I've started looking around for good sources to find examples that have proper coding to use in some of my games. Like that cheesy cursor change D&D button, istead of paying an extra 20$ for the pro version to use that D&D option, I found the coding online to set my own cursor in my game. It works great but when ever there is a room change the cursor jumps to the relative position of the its object placed in that menu (room). I figure I could make an invisible control object to apply the cursor to the rooms so that when it changes rooms it doesn't jump from one place to another to the relative postion to the object.

If my entries seem out of place it's most likely me not being a frequent poster at some blogs.

^Uh-huh. I have registered (or pro) GM (best $20 I ever spent), and I never even use that silly action, or the corresponding function. Drawing a sprite at mouse_x and mouse_y is just better.

Don't worry about getting books or whatnot. Just practice, and read the GM helpfile. That's the only book you need.

If you'd like to learn techniques and such, things that aren't covered in the help file, just have a look through the various examples on this site (examples page located on the top bar).

Hope that helps. Oh, and welcome to 64Digits! Enjoy your stay!
