I am a self confessed graphics whore. I love nothing more than good looking games. Naturally, I will stop playing that game after a short time if it plays like a turd, but I really do love looking at good looking games.
Similarly I love MAKING games with nifty effects. Most of my projects start off due to wanting to make an effect that I've seen in professional. So I'm going to be showing a few things here fro my project Phyrate, which I'm sure some of you may remember.Water:This is how this project started off, but it's come a long way since it was a solid colour bounding up and down rather horribly. It's all dynamic as well. The waves propagate out from where they are caused, and the background is skewed as a result of this. Now, I'm also kind of fortunate to have a fairly low spec machine, because it means that I really do have to try hard to churn stuff out at 30fps. Which is another pet peeve of mine….slow down sucks.Lighting:My lighting engine is unfortunately only a static one, but I still like how it came out.Nothing fancy but it does the job methinks.Rain:Now THIS I was really proud of too. It really does look positively gorgeous in motion. So…there we go. As for the game I should have a new demo out soon…but I keep saying that. I reckon it's a jinx <.<;As for effects I'm working now, I'm working on some fluid fire/smoke :)
Woah knighty, that's terrible! You should ask OL for his lighting engine. It's just as pretty and it's real-time.
I spent ages brainstorming and researching algorithms but I just couldn't find anything that would work well in real time. I will enquire as to this OL fella.
What version of Game Maker are you using?
6.1
Game play needs good graphics to be fun and good graphics need game play to be fun. Keep a good balance.
The backgrounds & lighting in this game look phenomenal!
@serprex/ I collect old systems, the NES(6502) top loader is my 2nd fav, 1st is the Super Grafx(Hu6502)+ more vram,colors,s-channels & backgrounds.I like my 8bit games with scanlines though.
