A tiff with Digital Rights Management

I've never really been bothered much by DRM's (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management" target="_blank">Digital Rights Management</a>). One field in which its negative impact was possibly greatest felt was when it came to music, but fortunately for me, the sort of music I live for are a little "esoteric", and not a significant target by pirates. Besides, most of the tools and games I have on my computer are freeware, and so by not really being a consumer of commercial software, I have not been inconvenienced much by DRM's.

The only incident I had was a while ago when I re-formatted my computer and had difficulties activating Microsoft Office. But with a single quick phone-call, I was able to get it back into working order. A little inconvenience, but bearable.

What really infuriated me was the difficulties I had when trying to upgrade GM6 - which I use a lot for my game development - to the newest available version, GM7. From the very start, I actually had respect for its creator, Mark Overmars, for the "independent" approach he took in developing GM. And that included his turning down of various offers to commercialise it. But with his recent partnering with <a href="http://yoyogames.com" target="_blank">Yoyogames</a>, this new version of GM however, features a whole new activation system altogether, which has greatly inconvenienced me.

Sparing the details, to put it simply, I cannot use the registered version of GM7 now because of some limitations on my computer.

. . . .

Geez, that really sucks. It's not my computer, I just can't afford it by the only way I can pay.

That sucks that it doesn't work, however, yyg is still fairly independant; if you look at their blog, they have an entry in there, introducing all the members of the "staff", and there's only four or five people working on it. (And as of right now, Mark is still the only one developing it, and [publicly], YYG is simply taking care of the online aspects)

Also, you have to keep in mind that GM7 was released in the past 24 hours, and a quick glance at what people on 64D are talking about, and it's quite apparent that there have been thousands of people downloading and registering GM all at once - not to mention that this is the first time YYG has dealt with this, and likely need to work some things out. Give it a few days, and the activation should be working fine.

If you don't have internet access on your computer, you can't register. I don't even know why you could with GM6 and GM5…

I guess I was one of the first to activate, then, because I had no trouble…I just hated the activation time length over what it used to be.

Kilin, it's not the absence of an internet connection. It's that IE is just entirely screwed up. I've lived with Firefox for a really long time, and it serves me well.

It's just that the activation for GM7 uses Internet Explorer, and so that's where the trouble is.

I feel your pain. In fact, I think half of the GM community does. :P

I really hope YoYoGames sorts things out soon. At the moment I hate their guts.

One hasn't been able to register for the past month or so.
