Kilin Eats an Onion

Posted by Castypher on May 11, 2015, 2:14 p.m.

It's been nearly a year since I've posted anything. And with my usual procrastinating buddies coming back and saying things (hello Taizen, Charlo, and colseed), I felt more than a little obligated. My break was for the same reason as Charlo's – people here seemed to stop being interested in game design so I had no reason to post anything here because that's all I do with my time.

So, I went to California this past weekend to see a certain someone. It was a fantastic change of scenery, even though I spent most of my time outside LA. I got to see the ocean and sea lions and chickens (pigeons) and eat oysters and get sand in my hair and get lost in the confusing as fuck city grid system and get honked at by hundreds of angry LA drivers!

I didn't take a single picture!

Except of maybe one chicken (pigeon) that was throwing some grass around like a fucking moron.

I also got to walk around a castle so that was pretty fun too.

And I finally got around to watching Breaking Bad.

So I'm back home now and tired as fuck but a break from game playing and game making has been quite refreshing and now I'm pretty stoked to get back to work. I haven't done much since I got back (except sleep) but here's some stuff I did over the past few months that you might enjoy. Tell me if there's something here that you like and/or think I should finish, because I have a lot of works in progress.

Some screenshots:

Terminys - Unity Port Combat Test

Praecantrix - Some Spellcrafting (pardon the dust, still working on the interface)

Some GIFs:

Egg Simulator 2014 - Lighting Test

Egg Simulator 2014 - Climbing

Taizen's Bitchin' RPG - Basic Combat Engine

Some musics (all WIPs, please don't kill me):

Terminys - Mako Battle

Demon Storm - Maidens of Subjugation (needs instrumentation overhaul)

Praecantrix - Boss 1

Praecantrix - Final Boss (unfinished, cuts at 1:36)

Taizen's Bitchin' RPG - Another Bitchin' Boss (unfinished, unchanged since last posted - sorry Steven)

Taizen's Bitchin' RPG - Bitchin' Boss 3 (needs better depth in instrumentation)

Kilin, when do we get to hang out?

Toast 8 years, 11 months ago

@Kilin Yeah, I meant tiles. The pagoda type thingy is kind of background, though

I guess landscapes is a whole different skillset. Particularly for 2d games, you want to be able to ignore it, so in that respect, simplicity is good.

taizen, try putting the outline on another layer, duplicating the sprite layer, blurring it by like 1.5 pixels, then deleting everything outside of the outline and placing the blurred version between the other layers and decrease opacity. Makes an outline that isn't solid black, and looks really nice. If you make a sprite sheet, you can do this for all of your frames in an animation at once.

By the way, I really like this idea of remaking other people's art in your own style.

I am now working on a 3d model to render into a sprite

Where do you live? I think I'll be visiting California a few times a year, but mostly just parts around LA. Anaheim, Santa Monica, and the like.

Here is the non sprite model in zbrush

I feel like it should be mentioned to a few people that Egg Sim girl does not wear an apron.

That was half-assed shading on the skirt, because there's only so much you can do in such a small area, and realistic cloth shading looks pretty awful in such a resolution.

Nice model, Moikle. Looks eerily like a doll from my childhood.

Moikle, I don't know why, but that is my nightmare fuel.

@Kilin The dress is blue and white not black and gold etc etc

Moikle 8 years, 11 months ago

the shading certainly does make it look a little sinister
