A Little Bit O Beta

Posted by GamerHippo7 on April 26, 2008, 2:30 a.m.

Hey - HEY! Everybody.

Its GH7 here again with yet another rare update. This time I'd like to announce that the Beta for My new game: "Harpo's Amazing Adventure" is finally ready and being tested right NOW. No clamoring for testers here though, I have all I need on the job right now.

I'm uploading a short teaser trailer for the game that demonstrates the basic movement and level layouts for the game.

I guess now is the time in which I should share a little more information about this game so you, my fellow game designers, and bloggers can understand more about the game.

[Ideas]

-Creating Harpo's Amazing Adventure was a dream I've had since 1997 back when I attended elementary school. The Character "Harpo Jemlocke" was the star of a few comics I drew, and after playing Nintendo's "Yoshi's Island," I was inspired to become a game designer.

[Story]

The story is simple yet confusing. The land of Runia was ruled by seven spirits who were trapped inside crystal amulets by a greedy warlock named Nevil. Nevil wanted to control these seven spirits to harness the power to create whatever he desired, but the spirits sealed him inside a dark void for 700 years for his misdeed. Now crystallized, the spirits lay in wait for someone with pure desires to be their guardian. Unfortunately, Harpo's best friend Hazel was chosen as the new guardian, and upon Nevil's 700-year release from the Dark Void, Hazel is taken captive. Nevil's only desire is to obtain the Crystal Amulets from Hazel, but during his escape, one falls from his grasp. Harpo seizes the stray Crystal and sets off to rescue Hazel and the other Amulets from Nevil's clutches.

[Gameplay]

H.A.A. Is a simple platform game that allows players to occasionally choose which levels they play in order to reach Nevil's Castle.

Gems are scattered about the levels, and collecting 100 gems doubles you heath. Turning 3 to 6 or 4 to 8. Bosses appear after 3-4 levels and challenge players on their reflexes, speed, and endurance. Essences are unique powers found all over the game. Grabbing one will give you a certain ability for a limited time.

[It seems so simple though]

What makes this game different? What have I done?

–No outside engines or tutorials were used other than mine.

–All music and sound effects were created and composed by me.

–All sprites were created in MS paint and Game Maker's sprite editor.

–I took no advice from anyone here at 64 digits (Which is why I haven't been here for so many months)

I wanted to test my skills as a developer and see how much I can do with very little. To my surprise, it was quite a bit.

you named your game after oprah's studios?

GamerHippo7 16 years ago

No. It has nothing to do with Oprah. The name came from a stuffed hippo I had as a kid.

Harpo's Amazing Adventure looks good!

I like the stories, the game story and the story behind the idea for the game.

Eleven years later the game's come to life!

HAHAHAHA HARPO! *Ahem* *Regains composure*

Looks nice, hard to tell much from the video though, I'll be sure to play it when it's out. :)

Hmmm… er.. hmmmm???

This is what you have been doing since last year?

Hmmm… er.. hmmmm???

This is one though act to follow. I don't think The Square game I am making will beat this. But I don't intend to beat it any time soon. I'm in college, so I will focus on beating rebound and sapphire stories instead.

I've been working on multiple projects since last year. Total months working on "Harpo's Amazing Adventure" were from May-July August-November and February to now. :/ College is eating my time away too. Ha ha. But yeah, I haven't played a Mazimadu game I don't like, so keep programmin' Maz.
