Use It or Lose It (and hafta learn Godot), I guess.

Having not touched Game Maker in a year or few, today I received an e-mail from YoYo Games informing me that my data has been deleted in compliance with GDPR. Now maybe it's some sort of scam e-mail, but it appears legit… and furthermore, going to gamemaker.io (not from any links in said e-mail, obviously) to see if my login info still works, and it does not. Also no dice trying to get a password reset email, so I think they did actually nuke my account (and, I assume, my GMS2 license along with it) despite the fact that I don't live in a region where the GDPR applies. They also never sent out any warnings that my account was at risk of deletion if left inactive, as far as I can tell.

So I guess I have a couple of choices. I could start fresh by making a new account and pay $99 for a Professional GM license (and risk losing it if I happen to leave it unused for a good while), or… I could embrace FOSS and learn Godot instead. I think the title of this post makes my intentions clear, though in truth I've already been fooling around with Godot over the past couple weeks. YoYo deleting my account just seals the deal that I won't be returning to Game Maker, and also motivates me to be a strong Godot advocate.

Update: After chatting with support, I have confirmation that they did indeed delete my account. So yeah, Go Go Godot!
