news and an update

current project

first off, the news. although i have a few current projects, this is the one i'm putting the most care and effort into. it's called the hilltop shrine, and it's about a town having an ancient artifact stolen from its shrine, and with it gone the spirits in the town catacombs are becoming restless. your job is to recover the artifact so that both the town and the spirits can rest.

the main town (i'm not going to keep it named clover)

the catacombs

this shouldn't take very long to complete at all. and in the event that i decide not to finish it, i'll release the editable. i promise

completed project

here's a screenshot of the example i just finished:

i'm mainly doing this because i am really, really disappointed in all of the other platform examples. when i first started gm and wanted to make a platformer, i either couldn't understand the tutorials, or the examples were just plain terrible. hopefully this will be a lot more useful for people who want to do something like this.

to appreciate the example, you'd really have to poke around in the code and get an idea of how everything works. it's all modular, and everything kind of snaps together like legos. it's more of an example in refinement, it shows you the nuances and subtleties of platforming in gamemaker and how to deal with them.

download it right now if you'd like

i ended up merging my first two posts together, two blogs on the same day is against the rules

I really like the graphics in the screenshots. The example also had a very charming style. A bit similar to Lazrael's Random Land. I hope to see more from you!

BTW, do I know you from anywhere else (maybe under a different username)?

thanks, and yes, the sprite style was inspired by random land (all the 'living' things are drawn with white outlines).

maybe you know me, i'm all over the internet =( my nick is always beam though.

That new game you're making looks very nice.

Random Land? It looks more like Adventure For The Two Herbs to me. Which is good. You have a knack for nice graphics, it seems. I'll have to play some of your stuff.
