Questions about the rules of the 64digit spring competition

Posted by fromsoysauce on April 3, 2014, 8:58 a.m.

I'm not entirely sure what to make out of rule 4. Could someone please help me clear up somethings before I go off an do something stupid?

What does "content created before the start of the competition" entail? For example could I edit a few Sprites or 3D models that I made into new models?

Also that bit about the engine confuses me. For example if I found a Metroid Prime engine made on Game Maker, could I start with that and transform it into a completely different game?

Also if I find some free resources online like free music or textures, would I be able to use them in my game?

Thanks for responding in advanced.

Using a pre-built game engine (like metroid) sort of system I wouldn't allow personally (as they have no idea how many modifications you made to the game), an engine (in my opinion) would be a collection libraries and code - however the sprites, music, background, level design, and most game design is YOUR own.

This is how I look at it, but obviously it's not the rules - there will be someone here later to correct me however.

The short of it is that you can't copy over some old source engine that you or anyone else may have made from which most if not all of your game has the capacity to be based. Engine functions, or assets such as sprites and music.

All I've imported into my entry is my textbox engine and series of wrapper functions to impart functionality on the subject of remappable keys.

I wouldn't be allowed to import, say, all of Chaos Weapon's battle system, given that four months of effort have gone into that and to use it would put me at a distinct advantage. etc. etc. etc.

Engines are fine as long as you're creating your own game. Reskinning is not game development, it's stealing. :P

Free online resources are fine, but a project that has had any stage of development before the competiton started being submitted is not.

There is a huge difference between using an engine and continuing a project. I allowed the use of resources for people who don't have the necessary skills to create their own graphics or music, but have really cool game ideas.
