Old games were cooler

Hello hello, here I am.

You know in the 90's (about 94-95 for me) the games were cooler because there weren't so many games.

Or, well there were quite many, but not as many as today.

Once I've bought a game, I played it, and played it, and played it.

I knew all the secret tunnels, where that specific power up were, how to do that and that.

You know what I'm talking about? I think games were made by people who wanted to make games before, now it's a job.

Therefore, games were made with more "love" in the beginning.

Today, I can almost never beat a game. Maybe it is because I always get new ones, as soon as I get tired of a game, but why do they get boring so fast?

I don't know really, maybe old games just were cooler.

From that, to this:

Look, a new avatar! Is this one better than the one I had earlier?

New banner too, which do you prefer, my new one up there, or my old one?

Lets end this blog with a image I made:

I know what you mean. Todays games are fun, sure, but they arn't as fun as they used to be. Nintendo does their games right, even if it is part of todays games. They focus on gameplay, not graphics. Sony and Microsoft focus on the graphical part of their games, not game play.

Back in the 90s, you couldn't focus on realistic graphics, seeing as that wasn't even posible untill the play station came out, and of course, that was limited. Ok, I'm digging to deep now.

….I dont know what you are talking about not being able to beat the games these days because I always do(unless its FF). But I gotta admit that games were better back then when they took only around 5 hours to beat but were hard like hell.

BenRK - yep I agree.

JMchaos - I don't mean that you CAN'T beat the games that are made now, but it's like… I don't know, there are so many that.. well I guess you're right; I'm not really sure what I'm talking about. It's just a feeling.

hm this doesn't make sense.. 5 hours and hard like hell, 5 hours seems a bit short for being so hard.

EDIT: ah, you can have a short - still hard, game

The old games were awesome becuase the systems sucked. Now that any joe schmoe can throw together good looking 3d graphics with a little bit of practice, the focus has shifted from gameplay. It's like math. Before caculators and advanced computers, mathemiticians had to spend time simplifying complex problems so they could be worked. Now, we just plug and chug at a couple of gigaherz. This has lead to a much shallower understanding of the real math behind it.

Commercial games have always been made for money, not fun. The difference is that back then, there weren't major issues like demographic splitting (half of young males like one thing, half like the other), or violence issues, or the idea that a game should push graphics.

Back then, there were only a few systems, and everyone knew they couldn't produce life-like graphics so no one tried. They just made games based on set ideas that everyone could agree upon. Mario was made to be lovable without having a real character basis, and the world was never meant to be immersive. It was made to be fun.

The big difference that everyone should notice is that back inthe 90s, games were still considered a new industry, and ideas were taken in alot easier. Today, game companies only accept an idea if it is feasible. That means, it should be just like alot of other projects so that the creators have basic engines and code to work with from other people. Game companies don't have the time or budget to risk on a new idea.

A good example would be Psychonauts. That was turned down by almost every major game development company in the world before it was finally accepted. It was extremely different from many games out today, and it's fanbase is very much in love with it… but it didn't do very well at all in the market, because people are so used to liking the same old thing, and didn't give it a chance.

It's a sad turn of events that have led here, but we're here, so deal with it.
