Finishing a game?

Posted by Hvatnajokl on Feb. 25, 2007, 3:40 p.m.

I have a problem with finishing my games. When I'm almost there I start to redo the entire graphics or rewrite all the code so it get's cleaner. I am now in a phase with my game Mean where I got all the features and pretty much all the code now all I need is graphics and maybe some better menues.

My thougths are:

Does anyone have these types of problems?

Got any tip on how to finish?

It would be very interesting working with a team, there are some games here with really great potential. I just played Vanish, a game with true potential.

I'm really hoping that the consolegames with x-box live and nintendo will harness the potenial of user created games for the consoles. They would earn tons of cash without creating the time consuming content and the gamers would be challenged by independent games with fresh new ideas. As opposed to the seaquel swamp boring releases by the giants.

Also there migth become opportunities for regular people to have gamemaking as jobs or extras.

Kind regards,

Since I first got into designing and making games I've had about 30~ unfinished games either lost on hard drive crashes, diskette dying(yes those old 1.5 mb plastic thingies), loss of interest or hitting a wall in the developement process.

Bottom line is that you may make lots of unfinished games, but the more you do, the easier it will be for future games you make.

I have seen many very sweet looking and feeling games that have never been completed for this reason.

Thats what happened to me with jet riders, I will make sure it will not happen to Kyle's quest.

I get about a quater the way through with all my games. I think the best tip would probably be to set your expectations at somewhere where you will actually reach them.

Eh, I sometimes abandon a game because I get bored or making it, its not coming out good, or because my computer is too slow.

Hi I thanks for commenting althoug It's kind of a sad subject. Do you guys agree with Scott W who sais that it gets easyer the more games you make. In my case it's the opposite, I produced lots of games with d & d in the beginning. How about theese goodies, Alien aus Antverpen and The Space ship Trip.

Nowadays I write code and work alot on the game mecanics, that's a lot of fun. Maybe I just need a team that completes me?

Have you guys ever worked in teams? Please share your experiences.
