Multiplayer, engine #3

I'm starting work on a third iteration of DoC, using GMIrrlicht (which is now open source!) and designed for efficiency/modability. So far I've finished the era definition files, created the folder hierarchy, and created a world-map generator. It uses a combined heightmap (Accented and smoothed), temperature map, and fertility map …

So, what I have so far for my contest entry:

* Full-motion 3d-rendered logo video

* Working, stylized menu system

* Many, many rendered images (About 20 thousand, all told)

* Hero creation and random hero generator for AI

* Fully-working AI

* Basic scenario setup system - it works …

The Pass: AI

Lotsa text in this one, sorry.

Anyway, my Pass AI is approaching competent levels. It will now:

* Gather resources intelligently (Goes for the best, closest ones first)

* Build counter units/buildings to your forces

* Attack when it has a sufficient number of troops

* Retreat if the situation …

The Pass: Grafix!

So, I've completed two units' worth of animations (1 mb each; 100 frames; 8 directions. I know it's a bit large, but honestly what do people expect?) and working on another; each unit takes about half an hour to render out.

Total soldier count (when done): 32. This includes 4 …

The Pass

Judging from YYG's official statements, they are a casual games company. So, maybe a casual game has more chance of winning the $1000 prize than my gigantic DoC. So, I figure if I make a casual game as well, I have a doubled chance of winning.

So…

There have been …

The Deep End: Procedural Content

So, I can (and have) fit a universe of up to 120 galaxies, each with up to 100,000 stars, each with up to 12 planets, each with up to 12 moons and 10 cities, and each of those objects with a uniquely-generated three-syllable name (3,168,000,000 entities, for those who are …

AKA Spilling Beans.

NVidia's 2004 drivers do not run OpenGL well… at all. If X3d games don't work well for you, make sure you have the current drivers.

I didn't even get a mention in the YYG contest - makes me wonder what happened. Not that I think it was …

War

The Official Announcement: War.

A turn-based strategy game in the style of Classic Empire/Empire Deluxe, War involves the construction of units, accrual of resources, and capturing of cities. It is fully-3d, turn-based, features a procedurally-generated hex map (which can potentially be AS LARGE as your memory allows, without impacting the …

The End and the beginning of the end.

Cryptic title, no?

Anyway, Quintus is going to be released today or tomorrow. I have to study for four finals after that - oh, joy.

There was one bug that cropped up during the last few days which almost killed the project itself - it had to do with passages …

Countdown: 13

Posted by omicron1 on Dec. 10, 2007, 12:03 a.m.

13 full days before the contest ends. I'm going to be working right up to my wire, which is 2 days early due to transportation home. The reason for this is none other than the scale of the game. In sum, so far I have completed:

25/25 levels (plus 2/20+ …
