C.O.W. RPG
--This project currently being junked and completely rebuilt. 2/24/07--

Alpha Version 12 -- 12/10/06 Build.

Minimum Game Requirments:
1.5+ GHz Processor
512mb Ram
64(128 recommended)mb nvidia video card

Changes since last version:
View point angel changed from 30 degrees to 45. No more zoomed in look.
Outside lighting changed, for better or worse, you decide.
Changed all doors, still have problems with eastward entry...
Movement fixed up and smooth now.
Sound effects for combat(partial)
Combat system basic, just attacks, no blocks or dodging yet...
Three creatures to fight, placed in some maps at various spots.
Increased room speeds to 60 and added a frame skipper.
Many other little changes...

Controls:
-Movement-
'W' or Up Arrow = move forward
'S' or Down Arrow = move backward
'A' or Left Arrow = straff left
'D' or Right Arrow = straff right

-Mouse Movement-
Moving mouse changes your view and direction when stat windows are not in view.
Left button moves you forward
Right button moves you backwards

-Interface-
'P' = Player stat window (mostly complete)
'K' = Skill info window (incomplete)
'I' = Inventory window (mostly complete)
'L' = Log book window (incomplete)
'M' = World Map window (incomplete)
'N' = System window (disabled)
Left click in Inventory Equips/Unequips or uses items.

-Combat-
Left click on...:
'Attack' = Sets attack mode. Then select weak/medium/strong for desired attack(stronger the more damage done and more energy lost)
'Magic' = Sets magic mode, does nothing.
'Run Away' = Instant run (for now)

-General-
'Esc' = quits game
'F9' = take snapshot (bmp file)
'F12' = increase brightness screen

Known Issues:
1) You'll notice that when you first start or first enter new maps there will be a short(depending on your system) delay. This is the height map loading and in most cases will only happen once. I still need to implement a better system but have been focusing on other aspects of the game...

2) Collisions are not perfect or even close to complete. The basics are there, walls are solid, shore lines are crudely blocked off, but certain furniture, lone trees, lamp posts, barrels and pottery are not.

Next thing to do...

Wow, that was very impressive. Obviously, compared to a commercial product, it wasn't brilliant; but the artwork, and some of the workings of the game, was very nice. Definitely a stand-out 3DWise. Unfortunately, i'm still against 3D games in GMaker.

Very impressive, best 3D project in GM so far.
I must say I've always had the same point of view as Rhys but this made me reconsider...

It's pretty good. Reminds me of the old Elder Scrolls games. However, it still needs a LOT of work. First off, the movement controls were pretty awful - everything feels stiff. Ever tried mouselook-based movement? Second, everything looks EXTREMELY grainy, like you're playing in a moving magazine scan or something.

Other than those little problems, though, it's fairly nice. A little work and it could be great.

I also agree with Rhys... But you can see there has been a lot of work on this (maybe to much), because it could have been ALLOT easier in a program that is realy designd for making 3D stuff like games. I liked it though and are amazed what gamemaker is capable of If you can squeez out al its 3D functions. The night/day cycle was pretty cool (bit too fast) and I esspecialy liked the fog effect. Though the controls where a bit crappy and I would say: why not use the mouse to navigate straight away? not just with V pressed. I also always (on the few 3D games ive seen in GM) I have the feeling that the player is very small and the rest is huge.. there's something with the perspective that just doesnt feel right.. like you are looking through binoculars from the whrong side. Well that might be me but just saying... I would strongly advise you to reconsider the platform.. Sinds you are pretty good in 3D and coding, why not change to a program like 3D gamemaker or 3D studio max or something like that? But if you preffer this and want to finnish it... Keep going! Its good! would like to see the result! 8/10 so far

Good graphics, bad gameplay. Make it run at 60 FPS, and get rid of the camera hop.

Why be "against 3d games in game maker" it makes no sense. If they are fun yet made in gm does it really matter?

Are you deactivating the instances and keeping the draw distance the same as the fog because I get a very low FPS
1. Get rid of that dithered light filter, it looks aweful and dosen't effect the darkness, it just makes things look bleached out.
2. Get a decent gradient on the light glow.

Hm that was alright. It doesn't have any z axis things like tilting the camera, jumping, crouching, falling, latter's, etc but it's good in its own way :) One thing that I would recommend is loading bars in game. Like when you first start the game after you pick your family it just sort of freezes for a few seconds then moves on. I also found that same prob in other places and you might want to just add a loading bar so ppl playing don't think the game crashed.

That is very nice, I love the graphics and the overall presentation. Though I wouldn't mind seeing the people in 3D also. However, I very much love it. 9/10.

Relex, YOUR COMMENT IS RETARDED!, have you used 3DGamemaker, you can't do s**t in it, it just options, no coding at all.

Ghg, YOUR COMMENT IS RETARTED. You can do basically anything in Gamemaker that you set your mind to. Theres tons of coding. And yes, if you want, you can do your feces.

I won't lie to you, its not great. Or very good. But since this is obviously early beta, I won't rate you.

OMG this is amazing. The graphics are amazing, no doubt one of the best, if not the best, graphics ever done with Gamemaker. Great job! Though movement and everything is a bit buggy, and horrible lag at times, the graphics alone (and the fact it's a WIP) make this one a 10/10.

Spotted a bug with the wine glass, things don't draw through it! Easy fix, just mess with the depth values

How can you put too much work in to something?

Thanks for the input, I'll use this to help me improve my game. I also deleted some tangent topics to get rid of clutter.

Relex: ' I also always (on the few 3D games ive seen in GM) I have the feeling that the player is very small and the rest is huge.. there's something with the perspective that just doesnt feel right.. like you are looking through binoculars from the whrong side.'

I considered your comment and found that my perspective angle set at 30 degrees was the reason for the distroted view, thanks for helping me catch that. I pushed it up to 45 and things look more natural and less in your face. Thanks again.

I also altered my overlay so its less 'in your face' and more subtle like it supposed to be.

Head bobbing has also been tuned down so its more smooth and less jumpy.

As far as frame rates are concerned, I do have a system that turns of drawing functions and lights when past the fog and when further the instances are deactivated. However the instance deactivation process is based on a regional radius check so it does not disable objects out of view...hopefully I'll correct this and further improve frame rates.

Again, thanks for the input so far.

3D Gamemaker is appallingly bad, 3D Studio Max is animation software...

Calm down and stop being a n00b. Ghg was referring to 3D Gamemaker, a completely separate program made by a completely different company.

The game completely freezes when I try to play, as a result I'm not going to downrate it but I do suggest that you sort out the problem.

I indeed heared that 3Dgamemaker sucks... It was just an example cuz I dont any other program's where you can make 3D games in (I HAVE in fact heard you CAN make games in 3Dstudio Max (my 3D teacher at school told me..) the problem then would be you would have to learn the whole program and making games in it is even more pro... anyway I dont say this isnt good... because it is. Im only saying: There MIGHT be programs that are better and easier for making 3D games... cya
