Another Music Challenge

Posted by pounce4evur on Dec. 27, 2012, 4:38 a.m.

Hey guys. I just wanted to throw this out there, and see who's interested in, or has time for a music composition competition. Of course, this one would (hopefully) be a lot more organized than the last one, and I'll actually have time to sit down and judge this one, because I don't need to do Wintermester, seeing as I passed all my classes.

GIMME SOME IDEAS.

(don't anger the gods–these are PIECES.)

Deadlines

-January 5th (Start Date)

-January 22nd (Deadline)

Time Cap

Don't intentionally try to kill us with a 20-minute piece. If your piece runs a little long, that's fine, but please be aware of the fact that we've got to sit through and analyze every bit of your composition.

Theme

The theme is now Mystery!

**Decided to change this to a challenge, because coming up with a ranking system for music is really difficult and could prove to be unfair. Each piece will receive individual feedback, but will not be ranked or compared.

**********************************

EDIT:

Here's a list of the entries that have been posted thus far. I am posting ALL of the links that you guys have given us. If you want to scrap a piece, update/edit it, or don't want it to be critiqued, let me know.

I am willing to participate.

My submission will serve to help the judging by giving a clear 0/10 baseline.

Alright I'm participating as well, I've improved quite a lot since last time in my opinion :D

I'm not really sure how I could make an orchestral piece resemble space though

you guys get images from the nerdiest parts of tumblr, don't you?

i see i missed my chance at making a "30-minute prog song" joke. so i guess i'll have to cap it after five minutes or so like a normal person. :P

Alright! This looks promising. So now we've got Juurian, Juju, MMORPGguy, Kamira, Charlie, and Iasper.

Kamira's idea sounds fair. I asked about the cap just because I know that putting a limit on music is confining, and it's also annoying. A lot of pieces just wouldn't feel natural. So, don't make your pieces ridiculously long, for the sake of the judges and listeners. I mean, as far as I can tell, you could get away with a 12-minute piece as long as all 12 minutes keep me entertained.

Also, I'm pretty sure no one put in ideas for theme. I think Space is a broad enough theme, but regardless, trombone or euphonium could just about fit any theme we throw out there. Iasper seemed to have trouble with the theme, though…

You need to broaden your mind, mate.

There are all kinds of solutions to that puzzle.

The question is, which makes the most sense to "you"?

Iasper 11 years, 4 months ago

I'll probably find some way to make it sound a bit spacy, but since everyone associates space with technology and stuff I think most pieces will have random blips and other electronic sounds which I for example couldn't do as easily. Don't mind me though, I'll find some way to make it sound like it should.

You make a good point, but that's kind of what I was going for. You could make it resemble some of the music in 2001: A Space Odyssey, or an epic space adventure, or you could just make it sound very techno and robotic. I suggested space because (to me), it sounds like a broad enough theme that just about anything could fit it.

All opposed, suggest something!

Also, flashback, I totally skipped over your comment. I apologize. What did you mean by that?

Taizen Chisou 11 years, 4 months ago

I want to try~

Taizen's in!

Steven hit the nail on the head. Ambient's totally the word I was looking for. But really, just watch any movie about space, and really listen to the music behind each scene. The possibilities are endless!
